Overview: This is an improv block that creates a rectangle (a square is ok too!). Below is my inspiration photo (from Flickr titled “Box Quilt 1”). The finished rectangle/square can be any size you end up with, but no larger than the 16 1/2" per our Hive rules. The only construction rules are:
1. It has right angles (not wonky improv).
2. Fabric should be solids and/or small prints that could read as almost
solid from a distance.
3. Contains between 3 - 7 “layers” of boxes with varied width of each
“layer” of the box.
4. High contrast between the adjacent “layers” in the boxes.
Here are some pics of fabrics that would work from my stash. I can’t wait to see what you have in yours!
Directions:
1. Choose your center box of any size and trim to square it up (remember it doesn’t have to be a true square, but could be, just as long as it’s a rectangle).
2. Choose a high contrast second fabric to frame the center box by adding a strip on each side of your center, then a strip on the top and bottom. Trim to square up.
3. Repeat with a high contrast third fabric and frame your existing block.
4. You can stop here or keep going with a high contrast fourth, fifth, sixth, or seventh fabric. Remember I’d like varied sizes so don’t worry about the dimensions that the final box ends up measuring — it can be tiny or big or somewhere in between! My finished block below has 5 “layers” and measures 8” x 7”.
