Hive 8 - January Block for Laura

Here is the block for Laura!
Thank you for your clear directions Laura, made it very easy to sew this block for you!  It will be fun to see what you create once you receive them all.  I will mail early next week and will update this post when it's done.  (Update: Well it took longer than I expected to get the post office, but the block was mailed today 1-20-16 and should arrive before next Monday.  I included the scrap triangle pieces and a few rough cut charms in neutrals.  -June)

Here are the answers to the questions!

1. Name:  June

2. Where you live:  San Diego CA

3. Tell us about your family: I have been married for 30 years, to a really nice guy and a professor.  He was founding president of the San Diego Chapter and I was founding president of the Orange County Chapter of a professional organization (CUE).  We had a mutual friend who encouraged us to go out.  I got a bonus check for coaching swimming and used that as the excuse to call him up for advice on getting a modem.  We have an adult son who recently married his high school sweetheart.  They live nearby and are both working and going to university for their masters degrees.

4. Tell us about your pets:  Currently no pets.  We do get to ‘babysit’ our son’s little dog a few times a year and that’s really fun.

5. How long have you been quilting?  Over many years, I think I’ve only been sewing about two!   I took my first class in 1990, and finished several tops that year and the next.  But I didn’t know how to finish the quilts so they are mostly still in boxes.  In 2010 I discovered the online quilting community of yahoo groups and blogs, liberated quilting, the block lotto, and Leah Day’s free motion project.  Everything came into place so I was able to learn how to FMQ and practiced mainly on blocks.  Things happened.  Now I’m getting back into the hobby, hoping to sew a bit a few days a week and I’m very glad to be part of this group!

6. What crafts do you do other than quilting?  No other crafts, unless you count cooking as a craft!

7. Fabric line you want to buy next: I’m trying to just use my stash now.

8. Preferred quilting method (FMQ, long arm, hand, etc.): I tried sewing with a long arm, but it wasn’t as wonderful as I had expected it to be.  Made me appreciate FMQing on a domestic machine. (and realize that I have to practice more to get better) I am interested in learning how to quilt by hand, but haven’t done that yet.

9. Where we can find you on social media:  Search for junedodge!  I have accounts everywhere I know to set up an account.  Even so I mainly use blogs to see what people are doing, mine is at: http://quiltquest.blogspot.com/  Maybe this year I’ll get back into the other things, now I use them mainly to enter contests.

10. Favorite book:  A Tale of Two Cities – it has everything: history, romance, drama, art, costumes, agony, joy…  I read a few books each year now.  I like them when I’m reading them, but nothing really stands out right now.

11. Favorite show to binge watch: Gosh everything!  We watch a lot of TV in the evenings. New Years Day we watched a lot of the Twilight Zone, we are going to start Mozart in the Jungle soon.

Here I am!

Hive 3 - January Block for Diana

I had lots of fun making this block for Diana, I love anything that uses lots of low volume fabrics, and even though my stash of Christmas colors wasn't great, I found enough to make the block. I also threw in some charms of low volume fabrics for her to use if she wants to make extra blocks. It went into the mail this morning, and I think that is the earliest I've ever mailed a block!

Now on to the questions

1. Name:   Shauna

2. Where you live:   Denton, TX, which is just north of Dallas.

3. Tell us about your family:   I’m single and currently share a house with my sister (who also quilts) and nephew. We are a motley crew, but it works.

4. Tell us about your pets:   My fur babies include Hollywood, a black lab mix, who at 65 pounds shouldn’t be a lap dog, but believes that he is. Marley, a terrier mix, that we adopted in October who is still warming up to us. And lastly Zoey, a shih tzu, who believes she is a princess, but unfortunately is getting old, deaf and blind, so we are trying to love what time we have left with her.

5. How long have you been quilting?  I took a quilting class with my sister-in-law over 20 years ago, but it was all hand quilting and I didn’t like it. Then in 2007 my sister and I took a class together and really fell in love with it. But my mom developed health issues, and I lost my job so we packed it away until 2012 when we both had the time and energy to start again. I just wish I had gotten into while my grandmother was still alive, she quilted and I would have loved to learn from her.

6. What crafts do you do other than quilting? I do a little counted cross-stitch, have done some loom knitting and digital scrapbooking, all of which I like, but all of which take a backseat to quilting.

7. Fabric line you want to buy next:   I’m trying to sew from my stash this year, my sister and I have enough projects that we could not buy fabric for several years and still be able to sew. But I’m guessing that I will fall off the wagon at some point this year and it will most likely be for the next Tula Pink bundle because I have a major weakness for her fabrics.

8. Preferred quilting method (FMQ, long arm, hand, etc.):  I have an Avante longarm, and mostly do meanders, but I’m happy with that because it gets quilts finished and that is what counts to me.

9. Where we can find you on social media: I blog at  http://shaunas-world.blogspot.com and  you can find me @tomosia on Instagram and Flickr.

10. Favorite book:  I admit I’m a junk reader, give me a Janet Evanovich book and I’m happy. I don’t want anything that is going to make me cry or depressed. But really these days it seems most of my reading is quilt magazines and blogs.

11. Favorite show to binge watch:   I could list a lot of shows, because I really like having the TV on while I sew. Series I am always ready to watch Big Bang Theory and NCIS, and I also love love love Fixer Upper. I could list more but these are the ones I can watch over and over.

Hive 7 Finished block for Cyndi

Hi All,

First my block.  Funny story...this is the first block I made for the Stash Bee last year too!

I am not sure I have the knack yet for low volume but I hope Cyndi likes her blocks. They should go out in the mail early next week.

Now onto my questions:

1.  Name:  Tisha Cavanaugh

2.  Where you live:  Albuquerque, New Mexico

3.  Family:  It's just me and my husband.  We've been married for almost 13 years.

4.  Pets:  We have 2 Shetland Sheepdogs.

5.  How long have you been quilting:  I took my first quilting class in 2010 and I have been going non-stop ever since.

6.  Other crafts:  I have cross-stitched since I was a teenager and I recently picked-up hand embroidery.

7.  Fabric line I am drooling over:  Well I had my eye on Blueberry Park but I picked up a few fat quarters of that at my last guild meeting.  So now I have my eye on Mendocino (Heather Ross is re-releasing this one!), Small Wonders Netherlands collection by Mary Fons, and Pacific by Elizabeth Hartman.

8.  Preferred Quilting Method:  I am a longarm quilter so my most of my quilting is done on my Innova- mostly free motion.  But I do still love to FMQ on my domestic.

9.  Social Media:  My website is quilticing.com,  I do have a Facebook account, but rarely post.  I recently opened an Instagram account and I am still learning how to use it, but you can find me @quilticing.

10.  Favorite Book:  I have been a long time fan of Outlander. I have been reading the books since 2002.

11.  Favorite show to binge watch:  Netflix is my guilty pleasure.  I love to have shows on in the background while I quilt.  My favs are West Wing, Psych, and Supernatural.  I also binge on Podcasting- love love love Crafty Planner and Modern Sewciety!!

Hope everyone has a great January.

Tisha

Below are some facts about me:
1. Name: Francis

2. Where you live: in the “Green Heart” of the Netherlands

Hive 2 January block for Karyn

Hello friends,

I'm Lori, and I live in southeast Michigan, with my husband of 34 years. We have two daughters, who are married.  One lives in Maryland, the other in Virginia.  We own a small business with an office in our home.  I do all the administrative work. So that means I can go to work in my PJ's when I want to.

I love lots of different kinds of fabrics, and follow many quilting blogs.  I sew nearly everyday, at least for a little while. I've been sewing as long as a I can remember, and quilting since the early 90's.

Now on to the good stuff.

Karyn asked for scrappy stars.  I can never make just one.  I hope she like these.

I can't wait to see what the block will be next month.

Lori

Hive 5 January Block

Love, love, Audrey's choice of block pattern and colors!  What a fun block to make!  Seriously glad to be off on such a good start for our Hive5!

Answering the get to know you questions:

1.  My name is Patty Fox.

2.  I live in The Woodlands, Texas, a northern suburb of Houston, sometimes fondly called "Very Far South Dallas."  I am a native born Houstonian and we have lived in The Woodlands 22 years.

3.  Extremely proud Mom 😍 of two grown 😢 Young Men.  Morgan is 27 and Conner is 23.  They both live far away, one in Philly, the other in Brooklyn.  They are good boys.  Married almost 28 years to Glenn, who brings me coffee in the morning.  Need I say more?

4.  We have a Princess Kitty, Moony, 10.5 years old, and she is a Munchkin.  She is not allowed in my studio, to her great dismay, and she is really cute.

5.  I started quilting again a year + ago, after taking a break for a few years.  I started in the late 1990's...

6.  Sick person here, OCD, when it comes to crafts/creativity.  Focus on one at a time, mostly, but have cycled through painting, knitting, photography...I am not accomplished at crocheting.  Cannot do it.

7.  Oh, I am an equal opportunity purchaser of fabric, but I do subscribe to Anna Maria Horner and Liberty of London clubs; and I like mostly modern stuff.

8.  Avante 18" longarm Handi Quilter owner for about 10 months.  Still figuring it out.  Sometimes I like to hand quilt and sometimes I quilt small projects on my domestic Bernina, if the longarm is busy.

9.  My moniker is "foxmorepatty" on IG, Pinterest and Flickr.  I try to stay off Facebook.  Fairly inept social media-wise.

10.  I used to read much more.  Constantly.  Now I find most fiction poorly written and boring.  I am in a bookclub, however, and recently enjoyed "The Rent Collector".  Rex Stout, Nero Wolfe stories are a longtime favorite.  I collect the books, if you want to send some my way.  Big fan of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games series.

11.  Well, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones have been past favs.  We do not watch a lot of TV.  My current fantasy is to binge Gaiam Yoga videos while actually practicing the art.

4. Tell us about your pets: We have two dogs, Rubi and Nugget. Rubi is a red Husky and Nugget is a white Husky/Malamute mix. They are high energy dogs and need daily exercise, which is provided by taking them mountain biking. Yup, I cheat, Rubi pulls me up the mountain! :)

Hive 8, January Block

Hello Hive 8 mates.  I'm quite excited to be in the stash bee with you and I've enjoyed reading about you in your posts.  Here's my block for Laura and here are my answers to the questions.

1. Name:  Lisa

2.  Where you live:  Guelph, Ontario.  Guelph is a small city not far from Toronto.

3.  Tell us about your Family:  I live with my husband Dwight.  We have two adult children who live near by.  One in Toronto, the other in Brantford.  We will be grandparents in March.

4.  Tell us about your pets.  We have one cat named Benny.  I would love to have a dog but don't really have the time right now.

5.  How long have you been quilting?  I took my first quilting class about 11 years ago.  I quilted off and on at first , but in the last few years since my kids have left home I've put in a lot more hours.

6.  What crafts do you do other than quilting?  I do a little bit of knitting.  I have been known to spin and weave, but it's quilting, sewing and blogging that take up my time at present.

7.  What fabric line do you want?  I haven't been paying that much attention to up coming fabric lines.  I like Art Gallery Fabrics a lot, as well as Allison Glass.  Lately I've been buying a lot of solids.

8.  What is your preferred quilting method.  I really love the look of hand quilting and I am always in awe when I go to a quilt show and see hand quilted quilts.  I'm not good at it though and very slow.  I'm currently working to improve my quilting skills on my domestic sewing machine, both free motion and straight line.

9.  Where can we find you on social media?  I blog at sunlightinwinterquilts.blogspot.ca.  I'm thinking of getting an instagram account.

10.  What is your favourite book?  This is a hard one.  I'm a member of a book club and I read all the time.  I don't think I have one favourite although I love almost everything written by Miriam Toews.
Other books I loved were Middlemarch ( I forget the author), the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, pretty much every thing by Wally Lamb.  I also love Quilting with a Modern Slant by Rachel May.

11.  What is your favourite show to binge watch?  I don't normally binge watch T.V.  The last show I binge watched with my husband was a joint Danish/Sweedish detective series called the bridge.  I binge watch shows with my daughter when she comes home.  With her I've watched the Wire and The Fall.

     This is me.
