Hive #2 - Completed Violet Color Block fo Mika

Stash Bee (Hive #2 - February) Color Block

This was a quick easy block to piece, but I love the result!
(It took longer for me to pick out the scraps last night, than to put it together)

Stash Bee (Hive #2 -February) Signature Block

Got the Signature Block done this morning.

They went in the mail this afternoon, and will be at it's new home on Monday!
Stash Bee (Hive #2 - February) Blocks

Hope you like it Mika :)

Bam. Bring it on February!

Hive #2 February from Sara

Samantha, your block was a bear for me to wrap my head around at first but after the initial square and the attaching strips to the corners it all made sense!  I had never made a pineapple but always wanted to.  I am glad I tried it but thank God that I don't have to make a whole quilt of it myself!!!

I dove into my stash and quickly found out I do not have many blacks or reds at all. But I did have enough reds to have a good variety and I used solid blacks with the two black prints I had. The solid black helped calm it down which I like anyway. I'm happy with how it came out. I also made a signature block which is made out of the very inside black fabric (glad I used it on such small parts or the white would have been too much.

Hope you like it Samantha!!!

Hive #2 Block for Miki :)

Well, I just read the directions about 4 hours ago and I already have 2 blocks completed and ready to go out! I hope you enjoy them Miki:

This is the first attempt, and I think I did pretty well. :)

Photo does not do the colors justice :(

Second attempt. I have to say I had some trouble working the waves at first, but then I realized that I was not thinking it through all the way. Then it was a sinch :)
Mission Complete

Sunni's (super late) Block

Well, did you see my name in the "didn't post, didn't send" category.
I feel so bad about that.
To hear about my whoas of this block, you can go here to hear more.

Anyway, in the end I remade it, and here is what I came up with.

I REALLY hope you like it Sunni!!

Hive #1 February Block Tutorial

Hopefully this is as easy as it seemed while I was doing it.... ;)  For February, Hive #1 will be doing a "Pineapple Log Cabin Block".  PLEASE read the whole tutorial before you begin as it will be easier if you haven't made a pineapple block before plus I did it a bit differently than other tutorials I've seen.

The block ends at about 9 3/4 inches.  Please do not square the blocks, allow me to do it.  Do not worry if your block is a little crooked or isn't exactly 9 3/4 inches.  Please use a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

You may make one or two blocks, it is completely up to each individual.  Signature blocks can be anything you want them to be and should be 5.5 inches when you are done with them so that they will be a 5 inch finished block on the back of the quilt.

Please use reds and blacks and put them in the sequence that they are in, in the tutorial.  You will need 1.5 inch strips of red and black fabrics and a 2 inch red square for the middle of the block.  You may use the same fabrics throughout, a different scrap for each piece, or you can do it the way I did, I'm not at all picky as long as you use red and black fabrics.

As you add strips leave 1/4 inch over the edges of the piece you are adding to.  You will be able to see this in the pictures.  Also press seams out as you work.  I will put the pictures first with the explanation below them.  If anything is unclear please ask in the comments and I will do my best to explain.

Starting with the center square sew a black 1.5 inch wide piece to one side, press the seam out or toward the black fabric, sew a black piece to the opposite side, press the seam out and then sew a black piece to each of the remaining sides pressing the seams toward the black fabric after you sew each piece on.  Notice how I have 1/4 inch of fabric overlap?  You will need to do this with each piece you add.

After each piece of black is added and pressed, turn the piece over and trim to square so that the back looks like this and the front looks like:

Next you will add red strips.

After you add the row of red making sure you leave at least 1/4 inch of overlap on each side you will again flip it wrong side up on your cutting mat.

At this point I used the 45 degree angle line on my cutting ruler.  Line the edge of the ruler up so you are cutting right at the point of the black and the edge of your block is on the 45 degree line if you wish to do it this way.

Here is the second cut.  Sorry about the glare, but again the black point is lined with the edge of the ruler where you intend to cut and the 45 degree line is along the edge of your block.

This is how it looks after you square it up.

Add another row of black 1.5 inch strips.

At this point you will want to start trimming along the edge of the previous addition.

Add another row of red once you get the black trimmed.

Trim along the edge of the black as you can see here.

Now you will continue to add strips and trim them as shown in the following pictures.

Remember as you add strips to make sure there is 1/4 inch over the edge on both sides.

Continue to alternate red and black until you have 4 rows of each NOT counting the center square.

Once your block looks like the above you are almost done!  The next step is to add a black strip to the last red strip like the picture below.

As with each time before, flip the block to the wrong side and trim after you press the seams outward.  Your finished block looks like the one below.  I know the corners are weird but that is how I want them, I plan to add another small triangle of an as yet undetermined color so that once the squares are all together that small bit in the corners will tie it all together.

Thank you everyone in advance, and I hope this tutorial makes sense.  Please if you have any questions I will do my very best to answer them and I'm sorry it is so picture heavy.

Hive #2 block for Miki

I, too, finished these last night.  My machine is going in the shop soon, and I think it might be at least 2-3 weeks (eek!) before I get it back, so I wanted to make sure I can get these in the mail on time.

Here's what I ended up with:

I tried to do curves, but they are so gentle that you can't really tell they're there unless you look closely.  I tried to match the fabric style to your original post.   Hope they work for you!

Would you like a signature block as well?  If so, what size?

Hive #2, Stripped!

We have been offered a simple but effective strippy block for this month, and, as it is my day off, I am off to a flying start. First bee over-enthusiasm, I expect! So here are my offerings, I hope they are acceptable to you, Miki. Why is it that the threads only appear in the photo? and not when you are setting up the shot?

First up, a green block, I saw Miki had added some pieces together to make a strip long enough, so I trust that is OK? And I have left the blocks a little large, so Miki can tidy them up at the end she prefers.

Second block is blue, all fairly deep blues, so I hope this fits the bill as well. When Miki tells all on her desire for a signature block, I will be able to decide whether to send immediately, or hang on and make this first.

Thank you for this block.

Peace and Truffula Trees

After a minor set-back in my block construction (you can read about here) which made Sunni and Danny laugh at me - a lot - I rallied and finished my blocks for January just in time to start February :)

The first tree is a "peace tree". I found this pillow below, and based it on that.

I wanted color though, so started with this but it seemed too plain.

So I added a few more, and the "grass" under the tree.

I really like the way it turned out. Next I made these...

Truffula trees!! I thought it was good time, what with The Lorax coming out this week in its updated version. Here is a close-up:

These are the originals:

Finally, my signature blocks. I used one of the example blocks posted when they were first brought up. It's 5" square. Hope you enjoy them, Sunni :D
