Hive #2 September Block- FishClaw

 Happy September!! 2023- I am using this blog post from 2015 for this block 

My husband has not received a quilt from me. We have known each other sixteen (now 25 years!) years and I think it time for him to get one, what do you think? The blocks you are going to make for me will contribute to his quilt.
Question to answer: out of all the quilts you have made, which one holds the most meaning for you? 

Color pull/ inspiration: 

I love the colors in this scarf. Mint, navy, soft yellow and cream. These colors also remind me of tropical fish and my husband scuba dives.

Block: 

The Bear Paw Block! I saw this on instagram a couple of months ago and it stuck with me. I just really like this pattern. I saw Red Pepper Quilts tutorial as I was researching and think it would be a good one to use. 

We are going to make 9. 5 inch Finished Bear Claw block. 

You will need the following: 

1 square 6.5" x 6.5"

1 square background fabric 3.5" x 3.5"

For the Half Square Triangles: 

2 squares background  4 inches x 4 inches

2 squares contrast fabric 4 inches x 4 inches

Trim the HST's to measure 3.5 inches x 3.5 inches

Block measures 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches- including seam allowances. 

You are going to help make "fish" for my scuba diving husband!

Inspiration and fabric pull: I love the scarf colors in the second picture. This scarf is my inspiration for my fabric pull. The greens, teals, navy and light yellows. Love!

The tutorial on Red Peppers quilt is great!  Below are my blocks to construct the bear paw block: 1- 6.5 x 6.5 inch block. 1- 3.5 x 3.5 block. 2- 4 x 4 blocks in light fabric and 2- 4 x 4 blocks in dark fabric.

You will place the light block on the top of the dark block and using a pencil or pen make a line down the middle of the square from point to point. You will use that line as your reference for sewing your HST. Once you sew on either side of the line, you will cut down the middle of the line and press towards the dark side of the fabric. You will need to size them down to 3.5 x 3.5 blocks. 

This is what your block should look like once your triangles are made. If you want to do multicolored "fins" by all means, go for it. You are making fish! 

 Sew the top two fins to the 3.5 x 3.5 block and press. 

 Sew the two side fins together, press, then sew to the main 6.5 x 6.5 block. 

Sew the top to your bottom part of your block and you have made a bear paw or in this case a fish! Hope you enjoyed the fish! Best, Meghan
