Hive 7 September Tutorial: Maple Leaves

Hello! My name is Jackie and I live in Oregon. This is my 4th time being in the Stash Bee. I was a beginning member when this Bee was first formed back in 2012. I made an Arkansas Crossroads quilt which is still one of my favorites!
 

I am really looking forward to fall so I have chosen the Maple Leaf block for a fall inspired quilt. Below is a photo of prints I have pulled from my stash.  Brown, gold yellow, orange and an orange red. Dark and medium tones of these colors would be great with no other colors mixed in.

I would like the background in any cream print such as these:

You will need for the leaf/main fabric:  3 - 4.5" squares

                                                                1 - 7.25" square

                                                                1 - 2" x 7" strip

Background fabric:                                 2 - 4.5" squares

                                                                1 - 7.25" square

You will be making the 4 HST's all at once. Place the two 7.25" squares right sides together and sew 1/4" from the edge all the way around the square. Then cut on the diagonal both ways to make 4 units like this:

Press and trim each unit to 4.5" 

For the stem take a 4.5" background square and cut in half on the diagonal once.

Center the 2" x 7" strip of stem fabric between both triangles and stitch  with 1/4" seam allowance.  Press and trim to 4.5" Make sure the 45 degree angle line on your ruler is centered on the stem fabric. I pressed my block in half so I had a guide to place my ruler on.

Layout all pieces and stitch together.  

I like to press my pieces to one side and then the other so I can nest the seams.  No need to press open.  Block should measure 12.5"

August Hive 1 Split Star

The tutorial was very easy to follow.  I just got mixed up with my sizes and ended up making more half square triangles than I needed.  Not sure how that happened.☺️  I look forward to the finish.  Happy to be a small part of such an important quilt. 

Block for Queen Kathy

Kathy asked for a split Star block for her turn as Queen.
I’ve had a few machine issues and was considering whether or not a new machine was in my future.  But, I dug out the old Singer 503A and am loving piecing on it again.

Hive 1 Blocks for Kathy

For this month's challenge, Kathy wanted us to make these stunning split star blocks. It's a really easy block that adds a great visual impact. The blue fabric I used is darker/brighter than it appears in my photo but I'm hoping it's still not too light. I just didn't have a lot of blue or red in my stash and I'm really trying to not buy any more fabric.

Wanta Fanta for Hive 4

Here's the Wanta Fanta block that you requested...I was glad to see that you requested it in orange, as I had a lovely selection of oranges for it.  Sorry for the crooked picture; I was trying to reduce shadows and thinking about that more than the straightness.

As for my dream vacation, I really would like to visit the moon (or Mars).  I expect it will be a reality someday.

Kathy is using our blocks to make a quilt for a veteran--what a great cause!!
This was a fun block to make--I hope the colors are what you were looking for.

Hello everyone!

Boy, my new machine is a treat, and I'm so glad to have been able to make these blocks on it!

 






There is one part of the paper pieced block that looks green but is definitely orange.  Karen, if you need me to make another one, let me know!

Hive 1 August Bright blue star

I've made this block before and love the look.  I think a group of these will make a splendid veteran's quilt.  I look forward to seeing it.  Since the method I use to make flying geese makes 4 at a time, I made two of these blocks rather than have the extras languish in my sewing room.

Hive 4 Karen's August Bock

Karen.   first of all....thank you so very much for giving us the option of blocks.  Paper piecing makes me shiver just seeing the name.   I definitely have to get over the fear because they are so pretty.   Need to find a class.   So hoping these snowball blocks will be ok.   I loved looking through my stash for orange...   I did have to repeat a few since I did not have 16 different ones.

Hive 1 block for Kathy

I have been pretty busy in my sewing room and my camera got buried under projects so this picture is late.  Kathy has already received the block (yay!).

The directions she provided were great and the block went together very smoothly.  I really liked the flying geese technique.


Thank you Kathy for asking for a block that I have never done. . . . it was great to learn a new "trick".

Hive 4 August blocks for Karen

I think I was putting this off a bit because foundation paper piecing is not my favourite technique.  Thank you for making me practice. And they turned out not too bad.  I look forward to seeing how you put these together Karen.  I will be mailing on Tuesday. 

Block for Tu-Na

Happy August ladies!!

I knew this block was going to be a tricky one for me, mainly because my stash is seriously lacking orange!  After running to my sewing room and pulling out literally every scrap of orange that I could find (digging through my scrap piles, my precuts piles, everything), I managed to find enough orange to complete the blocks!  Just for fun, below is a pic of my ENTIRE orange stash next to my easy-to-grab-for-a-photo stash of my favorite color, teal.  My stash is more “candy colors” than primary colors.  I guess I know what I need to look for next time I’m at the fabric store :)

Anyway... here are the blocks for Tu-Na.  I love paper piecing and love the way this block turned out, even if it isn’t my favorite color!  The whole quilt will be spectacular, but I don’t envy all the little squares Tu-Na will have to put together!

Wanta Fanta blocks for Karen hive 4

I was so excited to start these blocks as soon as I saw that they would be nice and easy for the month.  Well, I had a total blonde moment when I made the x-blocks and made them backwards, oops.  Good thing I noticed before I sent them.  So here are all my blocks for Karen.  I'll be sending along the backwards blocks, just for fun, too.  Along with the half square triangles from the square blocks.  Happy sewing!

Wanta Fanta blocks for August

It's hot hot hot here in Maine but a little air conditioning can go a long way.... Here are my Wanta Fanta blocks that, after a little mishap, came together pretty quickly.

And I also have some little HST's to Karen....

And about the little mishap...the heat must have gotten to me because I first made 8 pieces with the white in the center....

I guess I'll add them to my orphan block collection  😉

After cutting, and then rejecting some squares because I decided they were too yellow, I managed to find enough orange to get this fun block done. :) I love paper piecing, so this was right up my alley. Super fun block. :) 

I only showed pictures of one snowball and 4 paper pieced blocks, as the others are the same.

2014 Finished Quilt

Sometimes finishes take a long time... Anna from Hive 8 of our 2014 Stash Bee finally finished the quilt she was working on last year, made with blocks from her turn as Queen Bee. Here is the final product.

I had fun picking out oranges. And kept thinking of Fanta soda to go with the name.

My paper piecing skills were rusty. And I first did them in reverse: white squares with orange fabrics. Haha!

But I got It all sorted out and done.

Hive 2 Tutorial - Block for Kerry

Hi Hive 2!

I am requesting the Scrappy Crossroads Block by Lori Holt.  The picture above is directly from her website and the link to the tutorial is below:

I would like you to use low volumes in place of the aqua above.  By low volume, I am requesting low volumes with a white background.  I would be happy with low volumes with colors in them or they could be white with gray or black.  If your stash allows, I'd prefer each piece shown in aqua above to be a different low volume.  Here are some examples:

I want scrappy for the other fabrics.  I would like bright, clear colors for this quilt - red, pink, orange, yellow, blue, aqua, green, violet prints. Please no squares that are primarily brown or black.  It is fine if there is a small amount of those colors in a square that is primarily a bright color.

 Here are some examples:

I took these pictures at night - sorry they are dark.  Also, I cut off many greens!

I will post a sample block tomorrow.

Hi Hive Mates!  Here's my sample block:

You can follow Lori Holt's pressing directions or press how you prefer.  Here's how I pressed mine:

I nested the seams for the 16 patch and the 4 patch blocks.

When sewing the final seams to assemble the block, I pressed the seams away from the 4 patch and 16 patch blocks so my seams would nest.

So, the cutting of the 2 1/2 inch squares is what takes the longest.  I apologize if that is a burden for you.  I cut extras.  I could easily pop some squares in the mail to anyone who wants some precut.  That way you could mix them in with yours and you would have less to cut.

Let me know if you'd like some.  This is only three of the stacks I cut.
