Hive 8 March Block

This is Renae from Hive 8. I really enjoyed making this block for Amanda.

I really loved Amanda's color scheme of mint, navy and kelly green!

I cannot wait to see this gorgeous quilt when it is all done.

Finally, My March Hive 6 Block

Yay! Many things did not go my way this month but at least I was able to get this block done. I think this pattern is awesome and I look forward to seeing how this quilt turns out.

Hive 6 blocks for Katie

Hi all!  I'm loving seeing everyone's blocks and can't wait to see them all together!  Here are my blocks for you, Katie; hope you like them. They are on their way to you.  Happy sewing!

Modern Pinwheel Tutorial Hive 7-April

Hello everyone!

I am really enjoying my 2nd year in the Stash Bee and I hope you all are too. This month we are taking inspiration from the Quilty magazine Issue 5 from May/June 2013. I love this magazine but it's hard to find. For some reason the Deals near my house sometimes carries it and I think that's where I found this issue.

I was skimming through recently and saw that I had dog-eared this pattern. Anyone remember Jay McCarroll from Project Runway? Well, he quilts! And he designed this one!

I made a few changes to the original pattern to make the block bigger (11" finished instead of 8 1/2").

The color scheme I have chosen is a sea of blues, teal, and aqua. Here's my fabric pull:

Materials
white or neutral background fabric
1 fat quarter of colored fabric

Cutting
4- 5" background squares
4- 3 1/2" x 9" strips of either blue, teal, aqua...

Directions
1. Lay out 4 background and 4 strips as shown below.

2. Sew one background square and one strip together. Then piece the remaining 3 the same way.

3. Sew the top 2 pieces together and then the bottom 2.

4. Finally, join the final 2 pieces together and press. I put a pin in the center to keep the seams matched up. Try to press all your seams to the dark side please!

5. Press your block. Then, carefully trim your block to 11".

And you're done! Hope you find this block nice and easy!

Turquoise Facets - A Stash Bee 2015 Finish!

Hello Everyone,
It's Diana from Red Delicious Life and I wanted to share my Stash Bee 2015 quilt that I finished this past weekend! I love how it turned out!

If you're curious about any of the details, you can read more about it here.

Hive 7 Block for Pam

Funny Story.  I made this block for my hive last year.  So far I am 2 for 2 on repeats.  Too funny.  This block is super scrappy and it was fun to dig through all my scraps.  I hope Pam likes it.

See you next month.

A Patriotic Star for Lori

I create a lot of donation quilts so I knew I had a bounty of americana scraps to choose from when creating a star block for Lori. I work a lot with pre-cuts and make hundreds of HSTs from jelly roll strips. I swiped a few from this project

to create this 8" star block.

I love the contrast of the strict pointiness with the scrappy fabrics, and I hope that Lori does too!

Hive 2 Block for March

There we go! I had a hard time picking a star block- I don't like the look of most standard 6 and 8-point stars. So...baby's first paper pieced block!

And of course I couldn't make just one.

Photo loading isn't working right now but I'm going to give it another shot in a bit.

Hive 4 March Block for Toni

Here is my finished Union Jack block. I'm really glad that it was this month's block because I've been meaning to try making it.  I usually use soft whites like kona snow but used some kona white instead. Using the pure white really makes the angles look nice and crisp.

I hope you like it. The red fabric I used is one of my fave stashed reds.

Hive 2 star blocks for Lori

I have had one block done for awhile but wanted to do a second one.  I hope you like them Lori.  I enjoyed making them.

Hive 9 - March Block

Here is my March block for Christina!  I've actually had it done for a couple of weeks but hadn't gotten a chance to post it.  So much for trying to be done early this month!

I'll be honest, I really struggle with wonky blocks.  I think it is the scientist/engineer in me (heck, let's be honest - its the perfectionist in me!).  I always want everything to be logical, even, and organized.  So I really worked to go against my nature and make this as wonky as possible.

I trimmed my block to a smidgen over 17" square (the perfectionist couldn't leave the messy edges!) but that should still give you plenty of ability to trim down to your desired 16.5".  I hope you like it!

Hive 4 March Block for Toni

Finished!! My first paper pieced project.  After numerous you tube tutorials and countless tried and failed blocks, I finally figured it out.  It felt like upside down and backwards and hang on tight to those pieces while you flip and sew, but in the end, my "Green Eggs and Ham" block.  Toni, I do apologize for the imperfection on this one and hope you can find a place for it.  I tried my very best.    Kim

Hive-2 Block for Lori.

Late....but within the month it is supposed to be done.
So I am happy.
Colour requested are suppose to be easy but....
I found out that colours can look different in some pictures.
Hope these are allright?
Used this pattern, is paper piecing, easy for me.
Love stars, so no problem with that, only do you know how many starpatterns there are!!!!
And I have to pick one for someone else.......hard time doing that.
Thought it would be fun making it a little bit about my country colours too.
Then all of a sudden it all came together.
The colours, the pattern, the size.
After all it was fun to make this one.
Lori, I do hope it is worth the waiting?
Tomorrow it will go out in the mail, so hopefuly you will receive it before April 9th.
Warm regards from Holland.
Marga
Have a nice day

Hive 4 block for Toni

Hi everyone!

I am feeling the crunch this month!  Things are flying by (no houses or Mrs. Gulch yet), but I am happy to report that I did send this block off yesterday.  In the craziness that is my life right now, I managed to take a picture while in the post office.

The block came together easily, and I'm excited to see what the quilt will look like!

March block for Christina - Hive 9

Kelly here from Hive 9. Now this was a block I really enjoyed. It went super fast and was fun to put together. I actually finished it a few weeks ago but have been out of the country so I haven't had a chance to post it yet. I hope I didn't use too much pink for Christina. I have A LOT of pinks so it makes up most of what I have to work with.

Need to give this one final run under the iron, trim some threads and will pop it in the mail. Thank you for picking such a fun block.

March Block for Toni

I panicked when I finished this block, because it is not symmetrical but I see this is how the block turns out. I did the reverse colors, I believe it was stated that this would be an option.

Will get it in the mail tomorrow.

Hive 1 March block

This block was mailed today, I hope you love it, Robin!

Union Jack block for Toni

Paper piecing. I guess we can remove this one from the list of things I had planned to never try.

Because I am the kind of girl who never, ever reads the manual, I just kind of jumped into this one without even remotely attempting to engage my brain in the process. I mean, skimming through a couple of blog posts about paper piecing should totally be sufficient grounding, right?

There's no need to point out that glaring error, what with me not even getting the colours the right way around, yeah?

So after I ranted a little on Instagram I decided to go at it a little more logically. When I thought of it, it even made sense to sew the pieces together in NUMERICAL order. I know! Genius! How has nobody thought of this before? I even decided to cut and label all my pieces before I got going.

It came together nicely, though dear lord, slowly.

I managed to get most of the paper off, even, and the block was the right size the first, well, the second time around (if you count the quadrant and a half I had tried the previous day). Because some of the stitches came loose when I pulled off the paper, I stay stitched around the perimeter to make sure everything stayed in one piece.

And here it is in all its glory!

Hope it fits the colour scheme, Toni!

Union Jack

Here is my Union Jack.  I procrastinated a little bit with making this one.  For some reason the pattern intimidated me and I don't have many reds.

So back to my Mother-In-Law's scraps for the red, and then the whole thing came together quite easily.  I'm not sure why I was worried.

Hive 2 - Lori's March block

Lori,

I am so sorry I am late getting this posted. I am sending you two blocks - with a warning - I trimmed the darker block all wrong - but I thought I would send it in case you had an emergency and could use it.  Hope these are ok.

Hive 6 - March Blocks for Katie

What the heck happened to March??? Katie asked for Wanta Fanta blocks. I've had this block pattern in my quilt patterns file for well over a year. . . after making these blocks, I can tell you that I will not be making an entire quilt :) I think they look fantastic and I love the scrappy look to these blocks made with the 9 patch center.

These blocks will be winging their way to you, Katie, first thing tomorrow morning! I hope you like them and I can't wait to see your quilt, it is going to be fantastic!

Scrappy Cross for Pam March Hive 7

I had fun making this scrappy cross for Pam. I got to revisit some of my favorite fabrics ever. I sent it out yesterday on March 21st.

Looking forward to April's challenge!

Happy Quilting,
Mary

Hive 5 - March Cowboy blocks for Jane

As a newcomer to Hive 5 and Stash Bee in general I have appreciated the warm welcome emails from the Stash Bees.  Looking forward to more interesting blocks and to stretch my sewing skills.  My March blocks are pretty tame compared to the groovy purple cow and cowgirl blocks posted by some of my cohorts but I had a blast making them from my stash.

Hive 3 - March Blocks for Bonnie

Hello all, this is Shauna and I'm here to show you the blocks I made for Bonnie. I haven't made a disappearing four patch before, but it was so fun to make. I can see doing a quilt using this block in the future. I ended up making two blocks because they were a little like potato chips, couldn't do just one.

I love the colors Bonnie picked for her husband, they look really cool together.

I got these in the mail today, so hopefully Bonnie will have them by the end of the week. I can't wait to see her completed quilt.

Hive 1 block for Robin

This was a lovely block to put together and gave me a chance to dig around in the scrap bin (I swear theres a blackhole in there!) I'll be popping it in the mail to you this afternoon.

March block - hive 7

Pam - what a great block and smart idea to have help making enough blocks for a quilt.  I can't imagine cutting enough 2" squares tonso it on my own :)

Can't wait to see them all together!

Hive 8 March Block for Amanda

When I first read Amanda's tutorial, I was so certain that the greens in my stash would work, but when I had it made I started second guessing myself. Do you ever do that?  So, I found enough navy to make a second block and sent both.  Amanda has the blocks and told me that the greens did in fact work, and that both blocks will work for her.  I am so glad that they do!  I really need to stop second guessing and go with my first instinct.

Hive 1 March blocks for Robin

Robin, these were great scrap busters so I made you three! Can't wait to see your quilt come together.

Hive 3 March Block for Bonnie

Hive 3 March Block for Bonnie . I hope you like your block 😀 I enjoyed making this block for you I'm sending you two
