Hive 7 July Tutorial

This marks the 3rd year that I have been a part of the Stash Bee swap and every year I find new blocks that I love (and honestly a few that I dread). The block that I have chosen for this month is one that I made for a hive mate last year and I really loved how her's turned out so I decided that this year I wanted to use the same block but in different colors.

My color inspiration is this castle scene that I found online
by Zutto, I love the harmony of colors here, although the below color scheme forgot to include the lightest shade of blue and purple in the sky
For the block you will be using an assortment of bright purples, Fuchsia pinks, teal, bright blues and bright greens to create the geese and low volume white and light grey for the background, no color mixed in on the background fabrics please.

When I pulled a fabric representation it translates well with many of my favorite designers -- Tula Pink, Alison Glass, Anna Maria Horner, Cotton and Steel an Lizzy House.

I've chosen the Migration Block -- My hive mate Carolyn wrote a great tutorial last year and if you follow her steps you can't go wrong.
Migration - a bee block - Displacement Activity
Now I know how flying geese are, people love them or they hate them but there are plenty of tutorials and different ways to make them so usually there is a method that works for nearly everyone. The finished geese are -- Large 8.5 x 4.5, Medium 4.5 x 2.5 , Small 2.5 x 1.5 --and I am open to using which ever method works best for you. If you have any leftover geese or half square triangles, they are welcome to fly on over to my house as well because I know they will come in handy.

Here's my first blocks, one completed and the other just needs assembly.

I can't wait to see what all you talented ladies come up with, if you have any fabric choice questions feel free to message or tag me on Instagram @karmawillow or drop me an email.

Hive 6 - June 2017 block

Squeaking in under the wire!
This was such an easy block but so dramatic! I'm contemplating using this for a quilt for myself
Here are the blocks I made for you Paulette. .I hope they are what you wanted.

Stashbusting Geese Block for Rose

This was a fun block to make.  It really makes the scrappy geese look modern.  I'm looking forward to see how these blocks come together in a quilt.

Paulette's June Block for Hive 6

Just under the wire!  This was an easy, fun block to make.

USPS will pluck it from my mailbox tomorrow, 6/30, and hopefully into your mailbox early next week!

Best wishes,

Kimberly

Hive 1 June Block

What fun this was.    I finished last weekend but just posting it now.

Hive 3 June

I have had Queen Rose's block done sine June 1st, about time I blog it, eh?!?  I decided to use yellow thinking a lot of people don't have a ton of yellow. I have a ton of, um, everything lol.

I really like this block despite my love/hate relationship with flying geese.  I have sew much trouble with this simple and classic design.  I should get this over to you today, Rose.  I hope you're enjoying your new granddaughter!

Block for Lisa, Hive 2 June

I finished this block last week but things have been hectic here and I didn't get around to posting or mailing.

I hope you like it Lisa, I didn't have any white with black fabric left in my stash, I didn't want to make it all the same background so I compromised and bought two.  haven't made this block before although it is on my bucket list, I like the block so much maybe I should make it a pick up and go project, though I'd have to use a different form of appliqué.

With smiles from,
Kate

Block for Hive 9

Hi Betsy,
What a fun block to do, especially so close to July 4th weekend!
I was trying to finish a wedding gift, which I did, and so I had to wait until the end of the month to do your blocks--there's a second one peeking out from underneath!
I'll get them in the mail to you tomorrow morning.
I hope you like them and can't wait to see your finished quilt!
Liz

PS - Happy early Birthday!

Hive 2, June Block for Lisa

I didn't think they were going to fit but they did, you were right Lisa.   I've never done an Orange Peel block before.  It was very easy.  I'm putting in the mail today.

Hive 5, June block for Patti

I love this block! It's is on my "to do" list from now on :)
Patti asked for florals - it wasn't easy, but I've found some from in stash ;)
Hope you will like it.

Sending this today.
Happy sewing,
Maja

2016 Finish For Hive 1...

I finally finished my 2016 quilt from when I was part of Hive 1. This quilt was inspired by a friend who give me a quilt kit that she decided she didn't want to make. The kit was full of traditional fabrics in blues and yellow with a very simple beginning quilter pattern. I told my friend I would take the kit and make a quilt for her but I would most likely not use the pattern. She agreed, with the condition that she is going to donate the quilt to a worthy charity. When I signed up for the Stash Bee last year I decided to use the Tic Tac Toe pattern and I thought this would be a great way to get more blocks to make a larger quilt. It certainly turned into a bright, cheery, and not so traditional quilt that should make someone smile. The blues and yellows certainly feel like summer to me. Of course, little Katrina wanted in on the photo shoot.

Pineapples for Alison in Hive 4...

This is the Pineapple Block I made for Alison in Hive 4. I was part of Hive 1 in 2016 so I got to make a Pineapple Block for Alison last year as well. I'm very eager to see how her quilt turns out.

Hive 4 June block for Alison

How cute are these pineapple blocks? I initially only made one and put it by the front door so I'd remember to send it out, but then it sat there and sat there, looking lonely, so I made it a friend :).

Hive 5 - June Blocks

Patti asked for X and + blocks for June which I've always thought are such fun blocks.  The only problem is she asked for large floral prints a la Anna Maria Horner or Amy Butler to be used for the feature fabrics of the Xs.  I have pretty much zero in my stash from either Anna Maria Horner or Amy Butler and florals are pretty sparse as well.  I dug pretty deep and hopefully these florals are in line with what you are looking for, Patti!

Here are my finished blocks!

I'll be heading to the post office with these soon!

Hive 1 June Block for Alanna

Alanna asked everyone for flying geese in shades of green, gray, and white.  These were fun to put together (I appreciated the chance to practice geese points...), and I loved the soothing color palette.  It'll be a beautiful quilt!

Alanna--your blocks will be in the mail tomorrow.

June block for Paulette

This was such an easy block.  Why did I wait so long to make it?  I hope you like this one Paulette.  I think your quilt is going to look awesome!!  It is going into the mail today.

Pineapple Blocks for Alison (Hive 4)

I had so much fun making this super simple block for Alison. My life is all kinds of crazy right now so I was pleased to be able to knock this block out quickly.

I actually finished it quickly and hung it up for a pic and got so busy I forgot all about it until I got an email reminding me that I hadn't posted or mailed my block. OOPS!!

Which leads me to today....

I can't wait to see the finished quilt....I know Alison has been collecting these blocks for a while. This is going to be a stunner and I feel fortunate to be a part of it.

June - Hive 9 - Block for Betsy

I am way late posting this. The block has been sent and received, but I keep forgetting to post it here. Betsy picked a string block in red, white and blue. Who doesn't love a patriotic quilt. I pulled fabrics and that was probably the most time consuming part of this block. It went together very quickly. I keep saying I want to do a string quilt for myself, but that is just one of countless quilts I want to do.

I stole the photo Betsy posted on Facebook, because I can't find the one I took of the block before I mailed it. All of the blocks I've seen so far look great, I can't wait to see her quilt when it is done. So far I've enjoyed making every black this year and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Hive 5 for Patti

We are over half way through bees!  Patti's block was just as described - took longer to cut than sew.  However, it was a fun block to put together!

And what fun colors!  I hope everyone is well!

Block for Hive 9

Hi Betsy, I'm a Stash Bee Angel from Hive 5, buzzing in to let you know that I will be putting this block in the mail for you on Monday. Since I live in Florida too, it shouldn't take long to get to you., Enjoy! (It actually is square, it's just the pic that's wonky.)

June Hive 7

Sorry that it took so long to make.  I wanted to make early especially as it was going to New Zealand.  This month was so busy as my youngest son graduated from High School.  I hope you get them soon.

Hive 5 Blocks

Hive 5 June blocks for Patti.  It did take longer to cut everything out than to make the block.  My stash doesn't have much it the way of florals so hope the work for you Patti.  They are going in the mail today.

Hive 2 June Block

Hi Lisa glad you're able to join our group. Block will be in mail tomorrow.

Hive 5 - June

Patricia requested the X and + block which I love to use for scraps.  The one type of fabric I am low on is florals - the feature fabric she asked for.  Usually I would run out and shop, but I'm trying  to save not spend, so I scrounged my stash until I found four different florals for one complete block.

Oops!  Missed a few strings before the photo session!

Block for Hive 5

 Hello Hive 5
Patti I had fun looking in my stash for flowers (turns out I don't have very many) thank goodness for a fat quarter bundle of Amy Butler.  Hope you like the Block.

Have a great week.
Kristi

Block for Hive 6

Thank you for such an easy BIG block to make!  If I wasn't in the middle of moving and packing up my sewing space, I would have made two of these.   Hope you like it!

June Hive 2 Orange Peels for Lisa!

Lisa - these applique orange peels were a lot of fun, not to mention quick and easy!  Thanks again for stepping up to be June queen at the last minute! These will go in the mail soon.
Happy quilting!
Cheryl

Pineapple for Hive 4

I finished the pineapple for Alison.  I happen to love my yellow scraps, so this was especially fun to make.

Hive 7 June

I have some pretty little hearts for our hive momma!  Hope you like them - they go in the mail tomorrow and have a long trip ahead of them.  One is specially made to remind you of me - it has Texas shaped herringbone!

Hive 2 blocks for Lisa

I've never done appliqué before at all, so this was a new adventure. Fortunately it was totally doable!  Except for my challenges due to my inability to read thoroughly.  Your blocks should be in the mail by this weekend.   Your quilt will be lovely.

Thanks for the challenge!

Julie

Monday, June 19, 2017

These two Big Nines will go in the mail tomorrow. Thank you, Paulette, for this 'modern' block. I have several leftover floral nine patches and now I have a plan for using them.  I will make a donation quilt for my guild - I've already auditioned some fabric choices to make the BIG part!

ENJOY!

June Hive 3 Block for Rose

What a great block, Rose!

I had lots of fun pulling out and choosing the different fabrics - no repeats!

It went in the mail today, so you'll have it by the end of the week!

June Pineapple for Alison

I was in Hive 4 last year with Alison, and I loved this block so much I made 48 to make a quilt for my aunt who is the most hospitable person I know.  The Pineapple is the symbol for hospitality.  Sorry about the shadows on my picture.  I'm at my lake house on a rainy day trying to figure out camera lighting and not being too successful.  Now off to carve a Pineapple for a sweet treat!  Thank you, Alison, for such fun, and congratulations on your feature.

June Hive 4 Queen Alison Pineapple Block

Alison Little Bunny,

Here are your fun pineapple blocks.  They make me think of summer and sunshine, especially since we have loads of both here in Texas right now.  I will put these in the mail tomorrow, along with my May blocks, which are late.  Back from NY now this weekend and luxuriating in being home again.  Hope you like these and they work well with your others.  Patty

Orange Peel Block for Lisa (Hive 2)

Finished up Lisa's orange peel block last night. I had heard about this interfacing technique but never tried it. Thanks, Lisa, for the opportunity. It took me a couple of tries to get it right, as the first time I sewed the fusible side of the interfacing the wrong way and then discovered the template printed the wrong size. Definitely not functioning on all cylinders last night - but I got there. This is a fun and quick project.

Hope you like it! Can't wait to see if all together. What a bright and happy quilt this will be. I'll try to get the block in the mail tomorrow.

Stephanie

Hive 1 Block for Alanna

Hello Alanna,  Diane G here with your block for June.  I'm usually a precision piecer, but somehow I cut according to your oversized pieces and then I had to do the trimming down step.  It all worked out fine for the size.  Hope you like the colors.  Enjoy !!

Patti's Block for Hive 5 JUNE

Hive 5 June Block for Patti

I have to say I was daunted by the specifics of the fabric pull. Raspberry, Teal no problem but florals - tricky. This really is a MAGNIFICENT block and I really LOVED making it.
So I made one with spots.
Then I thought how about some Tula so I made this one.
Then I thought some Raspberry stripes???
And I made three by then so I had to make four to see what the block would look like.
They're on there way to you from little old New Zealand.
Miss September Anna :)
