February Blocks for Hive 1

Sorry I'm posting last-minute.  I'm learning a new photo editing software, so its taken me longer than I wanted to get decent pics.

Rose, I enjoyed this block and they were sent off this afternoon.  You should get them by the end of the week.  Enjoy!

Tu-Na Quilts: Katie's Block for Hive 4

It's with great pleasure that I present my block for Katie in Hive 4.

Katie asked for the Every Which Way Pinwheel block. You can find her tutorial and a link to the pattern here. It is in the envelope and will be mailed later today.

What I Learned Today:

1. February is a very short month!
2. Be careful when pressing blocks. Bias edges will stretch. Press not iron.
3. I do not have many blues in my stash. I should remedy that!
4. I do like the "test" button when inserting the links here on Blogger. My blog platform doesn't have that option.

Question: What color are you short of in your stash? Here in my AZ house, I have a smaller stash that only has 2 blues. My ND house is a whole other story. Tu-Na Helper (my husband) says I have enough there to start a fabric store. He's so funny.

Hive 1 - February for Rose

Fingers crossed this block makes it to it's destination as it's been a battle to get here.

1st:  I sat down to sew and we had a power cut
2nd: The following week it then too dark to take a photo
3rd:  My work laptop refused to log onto blogger so I had to wait until I was home

So fingers crossed that's the "3" things....

Hive Crash for Darrel

Want to almost guarantee that I will crash your hive?  Request novelty fabrics in your blocks!  I'm a sucker for novelty fabrics.  The block Darrel asked for was a bit of a challenge because each block needed 4 5" squares of the same fabric, but I was able to find a few sets in fabrics that are teenage-boy friendly.

I hope you these fit with what you have in mind, Darrel!

Emily, Hive 6

February block, Hive 1, in transit. . . . .after a bit of a rest!

This block has been completed for at least 2 weeks, but due to work and other "issues" I have not been able to get to the post office when they were open.

It is now on it's way to another "Jersey Girl" and will hopefully arrive before the weekend.

This was a fun and easy block and I look forward to seeing the completed top.  I am sure that it will be lovely.

Hive 2 block for Tracy

This is my block for Queen Tracy. The antenna is made out of bias tape because I don't embroider :-)

February - Hive 7

This month was the Disappearing 9 Patch.  The block is simple.  It goes together very quickly.  Whipped up the first block the first day of the tutorial.  One of my goals this year is to make at least two blocks for everyone.  The second block took longer as I really had to dig through the stack for "male" fabrics.

They look a bit wonky in the photo but they're really not!

Hive 4

Here is my block!  It's been done for at least a week, but I procrastinated on taking the picture because my phone died.  (And of course there were zero other ways to take a picture of the block in the house. :p)

Sorry for the shadowy picture - by the time I got out the Ipad to take the picture it was a dreary day.  But it's done!  I really like the colors and can't wait to see the final product.

Hive 4 March Block for Katie

The first thing I thought when I saw the tutorial was... I've seen this block before ...because I had.  I just made this block at the end of last years Stash Bee with the same colors so it was total deja vu for me.

It will be interesting to see how this quilt comes out....Block is in the mail to you this week :)

Finished Quilt - 2017 Hive 1

Excited to share my finished Stash Bee quilt from my turn as queen of Hive 1 last year.  I couldn't be more pleased with how it came out!

Thanks to everyone in Hive 1 for their contributions.  I love having something made by friends from all over the world!

This was a fun little block!  Katie asked for this flying geese beauty-everything came from my scrap boxes - I have a LOT of scraps and I have them all sorted according to color so it was pretty easy to sort out what I needed.  Love to use scraps!  Hope this fits the bill - enjoy!

Block for February Queen

I have once again been computer challenged when trying to get the picture to show up for this post.
Maybe I need a computer class..haha.  I really enjoyed making this block and had enough fabric cut to make two of them. They will be in the mail Saturday.

Completed Quilt from Hive 4 in 2016

I was Queen Bee in September, 2016. I received these great blocks and had the top completed for a while, but just got around to quilting and binding it. Thanks for all who sent in blocks. Now to work on my 2017 blocks!

Hello All! It's Diana. This was such a quick block to whip together. It definitely took me longer to pick out my fabrics than the actual sewing. I think this is going to make an awesome quilt.

Fun blocks for Queen Rose.

These blocks go together quickly.  I couldn’t find many aquas as they were all bagged up and being used for another project at our Lakehouse.  (Can’t be without a project or I would go crazy). I am looking forward to seeing your finish.

Scrappy is my favorite and it was fun looking for blues of all kinds. For my first one, I followed the tutorial link and it is just OK. I wasn't very happy with the way the seams were pressed so I tried pressing all the seams open and had better luck. I am sending both to you Rose, just in case you need another.

2018 and I are having words.  We are not getting along very well.  I’m hoping we can work out out issues.  Sorry this is posted late.  Hope you like pink.  I have quite a lot of it.  I’m always happy to use up scraps to make a lovely block!

February 2018 Hive 2 Block for Tracy

This was a fun block.  I was a bit worried at first, there were so many pieces and some of them very small for me.

Once I cut the pieces and laid them out, I was ready to piece.  I think it looks great and can't wait to see Tracy's finish.  I'll leave the antennae to you, Tracy.

February 2018 Stash 1 blocks for Rose

For easily made blocks like this, I'm inclined to make 2 blocks rather than one just because they sew up so fast.  I hope my turquoise  fabrics are not too far out of the color range you are looking for.  I enjoyed making these, Rose.

Here is my block. I had fun selecting fabrics.

 My flying geese gave me a bit of  grief matching points.

 But this will be stunning when they all go together. Can't wait to see it!

A January Star for Paulette - Hive 4

Paulette (Hive 4) asked for a Star for her block last month.

Here's the one I made for her. You can find her tutorial with pattern here.

She asked for scrappy backgrounds predominately in one color with a contrasting fabric for the star. This star looks much better in person. The yellow on the top left is darker than it appears here.

What I Learned Today:

1. Some tasks take more mental energy if left undone. This block came together quickly once I decided on which colors and fabrics to use.
2. The U.S. Post Office doesn't estimate how long it will take mail to get to Canada.
3. Mailing this block wasn't as expensive as I thought it might be. It cost only $1.42 which included a 21 cent "non-machine surcharge". The postal clerk hand wrote that on the envelope. Hopefully, it will arrive safely. This is the first time I've encountered that.
4. Some fabrics just don't seem to photograph well. Maybe I should photograph my fabric choices to help me decide which ones to use before cutting and sewing them together.

Question: Do you photograph your fabric selections before you decide which fabrics to use?

Hive 3 February Tutorial

Happy February, Quilty Friends!  I am Lee, your queen of Hive 3.  I am a mom in Connecticut who spends all of my spare time sewing and collecting fabric... I am a firm believer in the fact that fabric shopping and collecting is a related, but completely separate hobby from quilting.  And my gawd do I love buying fabric.  Any who... last year I was also in Hive 3, March was my month in 2017, and I will be asking for the same thing now as I did then...
A star block.  Any size block,  in any technique that you choose.  The most difficult part will surely be the freedom to choose.  So many beautiful star blocks out there!
My colors are navy blue and coral/peach. You may include shots of hot pink, lavender, and pale yellow.

Hive 5 Tutorial for the February 2018 Heart block

I have chosen this big (16") block. 

Last year I asked my hive mates to make me one in the colors red-pink-purple-lilac.

I received only blocks in the pink-purple-lilac spectrum hahahaha.

The only red block was the one I made myself for the tutorial.

So a new hive, new chances :-)

I would like the colors for these blocks to be RED-PINK- in all their shades.

Also a LOW VOLUME background is what I want for this block.

Now on to the cutting directions:

Cut 4 Low Volume Square blocks each measuring 5″ x 5″

Cut 2 RED blocks each measuring 5″ x 5″

Cut 2 PINK blocks each measuring 5″ x 5″

Cut 3 RED blocks each measuring 4.5″ x 4.5″

Cut 3 PINK blocks each measuring 4.5″ x 4.5″

Cut 2 Low Volume Blocks each measuring 4.5″ x 4.5″

Sewing Instructions:

Draw a diagonal line on the 4 Low Volume 5x5 squares. Place them right sides together on a RED and PINK 5x5"block, stitch 1/4" besides this line on both sides of the line. Cut the line and you have 8 Half Square Triangles.

 (Using 2 Low Volume and the 2 RED squares together make 4 half square triangles)

 (Using 2 Low Volume and the 2 PINK squares together make 4 half square triangles)

 Trim each half square triangle block to a 4.5″ x 4.5″ square.

Lay out all the HST and the remaining squares according to the image below.

Sew each row together to make the block.

And you're done! 

I make 'Droomdekentjes' , comfort blankets for children who are sick or who are in a not so nice place in their life. 
I will mix your blocks with the blocks I received last year and make two Droomdekentjes :-)
