I swear these looked bright when I made them...

We were asked to make 4 plain blocks and one signed block with our info and well wishes.

Wedding Quilt Blocks for Sara

005
I finished these quite a while ago, but haven’t had a chance to photograph and mail.  They will be in the  mail by Wednesday this week.   I could have easily made all pink or all blue blocks.  I really need to broaden my color palette in my stash:)  Hope you like!

Hive #2 June blocks..

This was a challenging block for me, cool but challenging.  I also ending up using a combination of hand and machine sewing.  My hubby drew the shape, after many attempts this is what we came up, he drew all kinds of cool designs but they were either to many points or the pieces were to small so I kept sending him back to the drawing board.  Hope you like it.

Hive #4 June blocks for Mandy

Hive 4 - June

So - here are my two blocks - I really enjoyed making these. I didn't have any greys in my stash because I don't like grey. So I ordered some online, and now I may be a convert! Then I realised that turquoise is my next issue - I hope you like the only one I could find in my stash - it's not as dark as it looks in the photos and it is patterned and the white is a white on white, so the only solid is the grey.

I'll pop them in the post next week - I hope you don't mind, but I won't put any letter/postcard in with them - it reduces postage. But there will be my siggy block, so you'll know it's me!

Hope you're having a good weekend
Jennie

June Block - Hive #4 - Friendship Hexagon

June Block - Hive #4 - Friendship Hexagon

Hi - I just wanted to post my constructed block as an example for folks looking to see the color combinations.  Hopefully the lighting is a little better than it was for my initial fabric pull.  I followed the tutorial I linked to and didn't have any problems.  The HST construction is very simple - the hardest part for me is maintaining a quarter-inch seam consistently and matching the seams when piecing.  Seeing as how my own seams don't match up perfectly, I certainly won't hold it against you if your own seams aren't 100% perfect :)

June Block - Friendship Hexagon

Hive 2 June block

This is my crystal block for June.  I hope it works for you!  This was a pretty new piecing technique for me.  I've paper pieced before, but it's always been sewing it down to a sheet of paper instead of creating paper patterns.  This seemed to work out fine as well, though.  I mailed it off today.

This was a great block to make!  Hope you like it as much as I do!!!

Hive #3 block for Evelyn

I have to admit, I actually made these blocks back in May. I knew I was going to be away all summer sailing and working in Santa Fe so I emailed Evelyn and asked if I could make her block ahead of time (and she graciously said 'yes'!).

The Lady Washington, official tall ship of Washington state, outside Newport, OR with no wind to be had. I am crewing on The Hawaiian Chieftain, another tall ship which sails with Lady.
These were the LAST thing I sewed before I packed up my sewing machine to rest over the summer. I didn't realize how scrappy they were going to be and made mine all one color; I may remake some scrappier ones in the fall once I get home. Anyway, here is a picture of how I am spending my summer and a picture of the blocks I sent to Evelyn. Hope everyone is looking at a good week ahead!

Mr. Roosevelt liked pink some days, I'm sure...

Simple, graphic, cheery--some of my favorite features in a quilt.  I already mailed this, and am now getting around to posting.  :)

Hive 4 - June Block - Friendship Hexagon

HIVE 4 BLOCK FOR JUNE 2012

Pattern: Friendship Hexagon

Tutorial available at: Don't Call Me Betsy

Due to the quick turn-around nature of this tutorial, I haven't been able to do a run-through of the block yet.  I do plan on making my own block(s) in the next few days and posting them as examples and highlighting any problems I have in the course of following Don't Call Me Betsy's tutorial.

The benefit of this block is that it is HSTs and squares, and it shouldn't require any particular solids.  It looks like it will come together pretty easily...at least I hope it does!

The above picture is from Don't Call Me Betsy (Elizabeth Dackson)

Here is the information for the block.

1.  Background - None
2.  Colors - Teal/Turquoise (not sure which is more appropriate here), Grey, White, Chartreuse, Green
3.  Please don't trim the block when you have finished sewing it. I will trim them once I receive them all.

My Own Fabric Pull (upside down, of course!)
These are the colors I have pulled for my blocks - feel free to use solids in your blocks if you want, as long as the block has a mix of patterned fabrics as well.  Thanks to the terrible lighting in my apartment, along with my less-than-reliable processing from my camera phone, the chartreuse shows up really yellow, but trust me, there's a bit a green that comes through.  The comforter underneath will be what the finished quilt will coordinate with on my bed.  (I needed something a dude would be OK to sleep under too.)

According to the tutorial at Don't Call Me Betsy, the finished size of the block will be 12.5". As I mentioned before, the block appears to be pretty simple to put together (HSTs and squares) but it makes a really striking pattern.  I do ask that you follow the general layout provided in the tutorial to preserver the center focus, but which colors you substitute where in the pattern are completely up to you!

I'd love to have two blocks from everyone if possible.

If you have any questions please e-mail me at mandytodd@gmail.com.  I'm looking forward to see what y'all come up with - the previous blocks have all been outstanding!

Hive 2 May and June

Hive 2 Block for May - Finally Done  AND and June's done already!!!!

May Hive 2 Block

My May block is late because while I thought I had the right color background fabric, it turns out I did not and had to special order it off the internet.  My apologies and I felt so guilty that I even finished June's block today also and both will be going out in the mail on Monday.....that is if I don't redo June's block before I make it to the mailbox.

June Hive 2 Block
June's block was my first attempt at paper piercing.  While glad to learn this new skill, I am definitely rough on it.  It took me three hours to do not including watching several different videos on the methodology. I am probably making it way harder than it should be so I will try it again and see if I can do better.  I do wish some of my hive lived close to me in Michigan so I could get some advice on what I am doing wrong.  May have to find a class at my LQS on this.

For this quilt piece, I was sorta thinking of crystals randomly floating in space while doing it so I hope that came across.

Hive #2 June Block

I have to admit that this block was a tricky one for me.  It took me forever to come up with a crystal shape that I liked that was unique, but once I had that it went a lot smoother.  I had all of my pieces cut and organized and was about to start sewing them together when my husband came in and asked "why don't you do that paper piecing thing where you sew them together by hand?"  ::pause:: Hmmn, interesting idea.  It would take longer but in the end I'd probably be a whole lot saner since I wouldn't have to sew a bunch of teeny-tiny Y-seams on my machine.  Done! and so I decided to sew the pieces together by hand.  BTW, I love that my husband knew what that was.  I love that he knows what paper piecing is.  (Though I can't take all the credit, his mom is a quilter too)

June Block for Stash Bee

So wha-la! Here is my Geometric Mess quilt block for Laurel.  100% hand pieced and hand appliqued
(I started to applique the pieces on with my machine but then I decided that the solid color going around each crystal distracted too much from each crystal, so I appliqued them on by hand).

I have to say that it was pretty relaxing to make this by hand.  It's nice to remember once in a while that I don't always need my machine and that simple is sometimes the best way to go.

I didn't make a signature block because you didn't say you wanted one, but if you do just let me know and I'll whip it up.  The block will be in the mail as soon as Rebeckah's is ready to go too.

June Hive #2

I tried my best and after I a lot of chatting with two other ladies from Hive #2 this is what I made:

I hope you like it. The background is black for sure! There is also a signature block 4.5'' but I am not sure if you wanted one.

Hive #2 May

stash bee May by helenjanei
stash bee May, a photo by helenjanei on Flickr.
I know they aren't all with me yet but I couldn't resist playing with them! It looks so great and I'm going to figure out how to add in some smaller stars as well. Some of the grays are majorly out (I think perhaps the wrong solid?) but I will either make cushions with them or maybe use them in the backing somehow?

Thank you everyone, I love it!

June blocks for Sara (Hive 1)

This evening I decided to sit down and whip up some blocks for Sara :)

Here are the six blocks that I sewed up,pretty!  The only problem, they are not the correct size!!  Awww, sad face :(  I cut out all the pieces before sewing up any of the blocks, big mistake on my part.

Here are the four that are the right size :)  Only problem is that I only had enough Kona White for these blocks.  So Sara, will these be okay for you?  I will send all 10 blocks to you,and maybe the smaller blocks can be incorporated on the back of the quilt.  Also I will sign one of the smaller blocks so that you still have the requested four.

Note:  I think that the Kona White squares need to be cut to 5.5 inches square, instead of the 5 x 5 inches.

Hive #1 June Block

Hopefully the fabrics I chose are okay.  It took me longer to actually find suitable fabric in my stash than it did to make the blocks!

:)

hive 2 :: here's my square

Ok, I just finished sewing my square last night; I'm a little slow at having an example for you guys.
Mamafairy is right: the iron is your best friend, I even made my own starch spray to keep everything stiff. When you get the hang of it, this process goes pretty fast.
 Happy sewing!
