Cindy's Block

Finally finished your block Cindy!  Sorry it took so long.

Tree for Tara {almost done}

Okay, this tree thing somehow had my mind beat all month.  I got my Kona Azure right at the beginning, cut a square...and pondered...

So, here is my attempt!  I've used Heat-n-Bond Ultra for this and am thinking the leaves stitched down with veins instead of around each leaf would look nice...unless you'd like me to leave it un-stitched.  I won't be able to mail it until Monday, so if you see this before then, I'd appreciate you letting me know.  I also realize it is a bit off-center, but the block is 13" square, so I'll leave the trimming to you!

{And, for my shameful lateness, I will be sending a few little extras in hopes you forgive me! **wink**}

Hive # 1 Gothic Windows block (for April)

Gothic Windows.
This tutorial is Extremely photo heavy, sorry about that.
If you want feel free to check out the tutorial that I used
to make this block.  (it is much better than mine) especially
the photos!
You can find it here

*NOTE*
Please read all the way through the tutorial before starting
to make a block.

These are the fabric requirements to make one (1) block

that measures 8 1/2"x 8 1/2"
(3) contrasting strips  that measure 2 1/2"x width of fabric.

*You don't really need that much yellow since you will only
be  cutting six (6) 2 1/2" squares*

Cutting the strips...
Yellow - (3) 2 1/2" squares (2 of these will need to be cut in
half on the diagonal)

Grey/black - (6) 4 1/2" rectangles

Grey/yellow print or black yellow print - (8) 2 1/2" squares
AND
(4) 4 1/2" rectangles

PER Block.

You will also need either a washable glue stick,or
regular ole washable Elmer's glue.

Fold each of the grey/black 2 1/2"x4 1/2" rectangles in half
wrong sides together.

Place them  in between the squares and rectangles.  In the photo
I have laid the pieces side by side so that you can see which
direction they need to go.
The folded edge is facing the bottom of the photo.

Now I have placed the other pieces on top and made a
sandwich.

You will be sewing the side the pins are in.

Make sure to sew from the open side to  the folded side of
the gray/black inner fabric.

Here are my sandwich's all chain stitched together!

Now for the cool part...
Open up each of your little sandwich's like so.

Next, open up the gray/black inner piece.

Fold the inner piece into a triangle/flying geese.
Press.

How cool is that?  You just made a one seam flying
geese block :)

Repeat with the remaining five (5) mini blocks.

All the mini geese blocks.
Take two (2) of the smaller blocks and sew them together.

They will look like this after sewn and pressed.
Place your yellow square (the one you didn't cut on the
diagonal),in the center.

Take your glue (stick or  bottle) and glue on the
edge of the yellow and the gray/black fabric.

Fold the gray/black fabric over onto the yellow square.
You can barley see where I have started to fold it over at
the top.

Continue folding the edges over all the way around the
square.

After pressing the edges down, take to your machine and
top stitch the gray/black edges down.

Now your center window is done!

Place your four (4) yellow triangle pieces in the center of
your four (4) remaining geese blocks.

*NOTE*

On the tutorial I followed the instructions here were to sew
a basting stitch across the bottom edge to hold the yellow
triangle in place.  What I did instead, was use my glue
stick and place a small dot of glue to hold the triangle in
place.

You can either sew the bottom edge,or use a dab of glue
to hold the triangle in place.

Follow the same steps as for the center window block you
made.  Glue, fold, press, topstitch, each of the four (4)
remaining blocks.

Sorry,I got my photos a little out of order!

Here I am in the process of topstitching the center window.

Center window all topstitched :)
Block layout.

First sew the three (3) center blocks together, then sew the
top and bottom blocks on to the center.

There you have it.
Gothic Windows!

I would like two (2) blocks,please.

You can use either  a gray/yellow or black/yellow print,or
one of each like I did.

Please make the "windows" yellow.

For the geese,or window frame you can either use gray or
or black.

Please Press All seams OPEN to reduce bulk.

Thank you all in advance :)  I hope you can understand my
tutorial,if not you can check out the one I used,or email me
with any questions you might have.

I will be on away from home on vacation starting the 4th
of the month, until sometime the 14th or 15th.  During
part of that time I will not have internet service.

I will check my email as often as I can while gone, and will
respond ASAP to any questions.

Tree Block for Tara

I finally finished my tree block for Tara!

I've had a busy month so I only just got around to making my block this week. After looking through Flickr at tree blocks for inspiration I found one I really liked only to come back to the Stash Bee blog and discover that it was one of the blocks Tara included in her inspiration mosaic.  So here it is:

The inspiration:

And here is my take:

Once I get Rebeckah's blocks from her I'll get them all in the mail and on their way to you Tara.  Hope you love them!

Tree Block Hive #2

I hope you like it! I totally finished it weeks ago but I am waiting on my friend to finish her block and we will send them together. Also I am in the middle of moving so I do not think I will be able to send it out Till next week.
I hope you like it!

It was based off of this tree: http://irvingparkgardenclub.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/tree.jpg
Again, in the middle of moving so I am having trouble being efficient!

Hive #1 Star Block

Ok, so I'm a little late in posting this considering I finished this bad boy a couple weeks ago.

Cindy, I am seriously THRILLED you chose this block. I might not have tried it otherwise. I learned a lot and absolutely love how it turned out. So here it is:

Paper Pieced Star

I'll have it out to you this week sometime.

March Block for Hive #2

I really enjoyed making this block and I hope paper piecing is okay! I have zero ability to draw so thought it best to stick with what I can do. It was fun being able to be so creative! Going in the post ASAP.

(ignore the colours on the photo - seriously bad camera phone shot! It is the right Kona blue, honestly!)

March block for Hive #2

I finally finished my tree block for Tara.  I was waiting to see other tree blocks before I started my own but I haven't seen many.  I think we all waited til the last minute :)

I'm happy with how it turned out.  I hope you like it too, Tara.  I couldn't decide what to make.  I sketched this up and turned it into a paper piece pattern. (I LOVE paper piecing!!) I think the original post said modern with bright colors so I chose a rainbow color scheme.  The sun was improv pieced which I have never done before.  I liked it!  This was a lot of fun!

If only the sun would come out here at home!

Bordered Stars

Just had to show you how they look together!  They are on my design wall in no special order.

I think this QOV quilt is going to look great!  Now I just need to get some opinions from you all.  Should I put blue or red sashing between each block or just sew the blocks together.  I'd really appreciate some advice from you Stash Bee ladies!

Thanks!

Cindy

PS - Rec'd Miki's block today!

Star for Cindy

Here is my paper pieced star for your Quilt of Valor quilt:

It was fun to make (a bit out of my skill range!), but I think it turned out usable and pretty.  I hope you enjoy it and thanks for picking such a worthy cause for our stitches.  It will be in the mail to you tomorrow.

[Very late] blocks for miki....

Finally getting around to posting these to the blog, and mailing these.... apologies for the late late mailing, but I hope you like them Miki, I left them a little larger than you asked for so that you can choose how to crop them, and I added some goodies into the envelope to say sorry xxxx

What a Star

I really like this pattern we did in Hive #1 this month. Now paper piecing is not my favorite technique but this star is a beauty when made.
So Cindy I hope you like.
And I hope who will receive this quilt will take pride in it's beauty also. I know they will appreciate it.

Here you go, Miss Cindy...

I've finished Cindy's Star for March (Hive #1).  I might actually make another one tonight to go with it, if the fates allow (fates = my children and their schedules from hell ;)

Hope you like them.  I think I will sign up to do a QOV, too.  I was also inspired by your blog post to join in the helping hands quilt project, so will be doing one of those this spring :)  Thanks!!

Hive 2 March Block

Tara,
Once again my friend Mary and I got together on Friday to make our blocks.  We always have a good time sewing together...some sewing and a lot of talking and laughing.  My inspiration came from a very unusual place (don't laugh).  I was playing Angry Birds late one night, trying to settle down from my day and there it was staring me in the face.  The cutest little tree.   So I started the ball rolling. Hope you like my spring tree.

Enjoy!  Judy

March Block - Hive 2

I spent Friday at my friend Judy's house and we worked on our blocks together.  We do some of our best work when we can work together. :0)  I got my inspiration from my leaf fabric I had in my stash.  I pressed some steam a seam on the back side and from there a fall tree was born.

Tara, I hope you enjoy!

hive 2 march blocks

I had two different ideas of trees I wanted to do for my trees. I really enjoy the look of geometric faceted shapes working together to form pictures. my yellow trees were loosely based off a drawing I did when I wanted to make a tree block for Sonny's hive. the 'leaves' were supposed to be loose hexagons fitted together, but when I started 'drawing' with my machine, the block decide what it was going to look like. It's kinda crazy, but the process was fun, and there's always new parts to look at when one comes back to it.
My second geometric tree was about sewing triangles together to form crystal shapes. It was hard to balance two different solids together, and I like how it almost swirls out to make a tree top. It's a tree of it's own, for sure. It seemed lonely by itself, so I gave it a geometric turtle to hang out  with it.  I hope it works out for the quilt. Thanks for the opportunity!
