Hive # 1 Gothic Windows block (for April)

Gothic Windows.
This tutorial is Extremely photo heavy, sorry about that.
If you want feel free to check out the tutorial that I used
to make this block.  (it is much better than mine) especially
the photos!
You can find it here

*NOTE*
Please read all the way through the tutorial before starting
to make a block.

These are the fabric requirements to make one (1) block

that measures 8 1/2"x 8 1/2"
(3) contrasting strips  that measure 2 1/2"x width of fabric.

*You don't really need that much yellow since you will only
be  cutting six (6) 2 1/2" squares*

Cutting the strips...
Yellow - (3) 2 1/2" squares (2 of these will need to be cut in
half on the diagonal)

Grey/black - (6) 4 1/2" rectangles

Grey/yellow print or black yellow print - (8) 2 1/2" squares
AND
(4) 4 1/2" rectangles

PER Block.

You will also need either a washable glue stick,or
regular ole washable Elmer's glue.

Fold each of the grey/black 2 1/2"x4 1/2" rectangles in half
wrong sides together.

Place them  in between the squares and rectangles.  In the photo
I have laid the pieces side by side so that you can see which
direction they need to go.
The folded edge is facing the bottom of the photo.

Now I have placed the other pieces on top and made a
sandwich.

You will be sewing the side the pins are in.

Make sure to sew from the open side to  the folded side of
the gray/black inner fabric.

Here are my sandwich's all chain stitched together!

Now for the cool part...
Open up each of your little sandwich's like so.

Next, open up the gray/black inner piece.

Fold the inner piece into a triangle/flying geese.
Press.

How cool is that?  You just made a one seam flying
geese block :)

Repeat with the remaining five (5) mini blocks.

All the mini geese blocks.
Take two (2) of the smaller blocks and sew them together.

They will look like this after sewn and pressed.
Place your yellow square (the one you didn't cut on the
diagonal),in the center.

Take your glue (stick or  bottle) and glue on the
edge of the yellow and the gray/black fabric.

Fold the gray/black fabric over onto the yellow square.
You can barley see where I have started to fold it over at
the top.

Continue folding the edges over all the way around the
square.

After pressing the edges down, take to your machine and
top stitch the gray/black edges down.

Now your center window is done!

Place your four (4) yellow triangle pieces in the center of
your four (4) remaining geese blocks.

*NOTE*

On the tutorial I followed the instructions here were to sew
a basting stitch across the bottom edge to hold the yellow
triangle in place.  What I did instead, was use my glue
stick and place a small dot of glue to hold the triangle in
place.

You can either sew the bottom edge,or use a dab of glue
to hold the triangle in place.

Follow the same steps as for the center window block you
made.  Glue, fold, press, topstitch, each of the four (4)
remaining blocks.

Sorry,I got my photos a little out of order!

Here I am in the process of topstitching the center window.

Center window all topstitched :)
Block layout.

First sew the three (3) center blocks together, then sew the
top and bottom blocks on to the center.

There you have it.
Gothic Windows!

I would like two (2) blocks,please.

You can use either  a gray/yellow or black/yellow print,or
one of each like I did.

Please make the "windows" yellow.

For the geese,or window frame you can either use gray or
or black.

Please Press All seams OPEN to reduce bulk.

Thank you all in advance :)  I hope you can understand my
tutorial,if not you can check out the one I used,or email me
with any questions you might have.

I will be on away from home on vacation starting the 4th
of the month, until sometime the 14th or 15th.  During
part of that time I will not have internet service.

I will check my email as often as I can while gone, and will
respond ASAP to any questions.

  5. I don't own any yellow and black or yellow and grey... does anyone have a suggestion of a collection with those colors? I guess I will have to buy some.

  6. I have some yellow in my stash already but I think it is a makower one. Seeing as we only need a little i'd rather not have to buy yardage, will it be ok or do you only want kona solids for the flat colours?

  7. Jewel, Lemon grove by Alice Kennedy for Timeless Treasures is the only one I can think of right off hand. I am sure there are lots of others tho.

Strawberry patch, you can just use what you have on hand,no need to buy any when you already have yellow.

  11. I will leave that up to each bee mate to decide. If you want to make one and have time I would love one. If you have already made/sent blocks to me without a siggy block,no worries :)
