April block for Heather

Heather set us free to make a block for her epic sampler quilt she is working on. I went through a few books and landed on this block called Front and Center by Monika Wintermantel out of the 99 Modern Blocks book. 

I too am working on a sampler quilt and have made this block before and really enjoy the finished result. Just a lot of half square triangles.

I put together another block out of the same book called Boxed up by Angela Yosten. Its a simple block but I thought Heather could use it or not. I really like the fabric I used for this block.

 Blocks were mailed on Thursday so Heather should be getting them soon. She asked if we sewed anything in addition to quilts.  I have to admit I'm quite a bag lady.  Recently I finished an Amy Butler weekener, and I just finished Noodlehead's Poolside Tote out of some Joel Dewberry fabric. I'm in love.

May is my lucky month and I'm working on my tutorial for you all. I can't wait!

Hive 3 April block

Here is my block for Heather. I was lazy and used someone else's pattern rather than coming up with my own--this one is from Wombat Quilts. I really liked it when she posted it and it was just the right size! I had a little trouble finding browns that would work but after discovering the dark brown dots in my scrap bin I rather like the way it turned out. It will be in the mail on Monday!

I learned to sew and make clothes when I was a kid, but these days it's mostly quilting with a few bags and other accessories thrown in. My husband does like me to make him shirts, and I make myself skirts from time to time. Occasionally I try something different but I find commercial patterns unbelievably frustrating--there is something bizarre about the sizing on them, and I'm pretty close to a standard set of measurements. It's maddening because I do have some special fabrics I really want to make some awesome clothing out of, but I'm afraid of it coming out wrong and then I'll never wear it.

Hive 9 April Block For Heather

No, I'm not sending this month's block in pieces, though getting it finished on time was a close call. I was rushing to beat the postman and forgot to take a picture of the finished block, so I'm posting the pic I snapped to help me keep it all sorted while I sewed. Keeping all those triangles going the right direction was a challenge with this block. I'll never admit to how much unsewing I did this this month. lol. I'm glad I met the challenge and can now take this one off my life list.

As for this month's question, I think if I could go back I would take the science and math classes that I skipped out on because they were hard. Girls were encourage to underestimate themselves when I was growing up, and I've often wished that I'd pushed beyond the art and literature I did study into the science and math that would have been so much more fun to teach.

Cranes For Liz

Paper piecing is one of my favorite things to do, so I was excited to try these origami cranes for Liz.  They were so fun I made three :) I can't wait to see the final quilt!!

I am up to be Queen for next month!  I will be spending the weekend picking which block I want  and making a sample.  I will be back by the 1st to post my tutorial ;)

Paper Pieced Cranes for Liz

Liz in Hive 1 asked us to make these cute paper pieced cranes for her this month. She wanted a scrappy low volume background in whites and creams and something a bit muted for the cranes. Her preference was a blue/teal palette. I decided to make two. They were a snap to put together. The blocks are 8.5" unfinished. I was excited to put my new low-volume fat eighth bundle to work. :-)

hive six Polaroid for Nicole

I almost forgot to post! This is Julia from hive six. We paper pieced this month. I liked the block, I hope it plays well with the others.

  
What is the best thing I ever made? My favorite always seems to be my last. Right now that is my very own king sized low volume scrap quilt.

I played around with her blue and green request and came up with these two

The colors look a bit off in my screen - I hope you will like them in person :)

A favorite childhood memory ... Going to my grandparents for dinner in the summer - it was the only time my grandpa took charge of the  meal when he made BLTs with thick slices of homegrown tomatoes!

My favourite childhood memory? Visits to Auckland zoo with my long-suffering grand-dad, who always let me take a toy and always ended up carrying it.

I had fun making these blocks and will definitely revisit this pattern in the future. Thanks Angela!

My favorite childhood memory is of watching Doctor Who with my dad on Sunday nights. We were the only ones who liked the show and I had him all to myself for an hour to get lost in the next adventure. (I am the youngest of 5 kids!) I am now a huge fan of the new version they've brought back because of that special time we used to share. I wish he were here to watch it with me.

As for your question about favorite quilting tool, I'd have to say it's my little snipper scissors that a friend gave me. They are made by Ginger and stay open until you need to snip something. Then they're ready and I don't have to lace my fingers into the regular holes of a scissor. Very handy!
