The colors for the ghost is simple, think pink 🩷
I would like your ghost to be any shade of pink you want. Patterned is fine, solid is fine, if you want to make it scrappy I just ask that your pink is all the same-ish shade. For example your ghost can be all different pastel pinks, or all hot pinks, but please don't mix the two. (Of course if you have a patterned pink use your best judgement if it's going to go cohesively with your block)
Please make the eyes and mouth (A) of the ghost each solid black. However you background can be a completely scrappy mix of blacks, black patterned, or a Halloween pattern if it's not too colorful. Please keep it mostly all black. I love spider webs so if you have 'em please consider using them.
Your finished block should measure 8½" × 13½"
Please note I'm not picky at all about how you press your blocks. Go with what feels right, but be sure to press between seams to keep your small pieces in line. I apologize, but we are working with smaller pieces for this block. I'm not a huge fan of 1½" pieces, but enlarging the block puts it larger then the swap allows for. Just do your best and keep that 1/4" seam allowance scant as heck 😅
I labeled my tutorial to match the one Riley Blake Designs put out. You can find it here https://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/assets/images/freepatterns/quiltpatterns/CelebrateWithHersheyFreePattern.pdf
However, the cutting instructions are for multiple ghosts at once. Below are the pieces you'll need to cut for just one ghost. I'm not doing either pumpkin, it's going to be just ghosts so disregard the rest of the tutorial. 👻
Cutting guide:
Black
J -1 (1½" × 8½")
C -2 (2½" × 2½" )
A -3 (1½" × 1½") these should be solid black please
K -4 ( 1½" × 2½")
Pink
Gb -1 (3½ x 8½)
Ge -3 (1½" × 2½")
Gc -1 (1½" × 8½")
Gd -2 (1½" × 4")
Ga -1 (5½ x 8½)
Gf -8 (1½" × 1½")
This block uses stitch and flip corners, I think we've already used them this year's swap. Super easy, draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of your square, stitch on the line, trim the extra off the corner leaving 1/4" for the seam allowance and press.
Using the stitch and flip technique, replace the 2 top corners of pink rectangle Gb with black C squares. Make sure you're putting right sides together first.
Using the stitch and flip technique again, replace the top 2 corners of black rectangle K with pink Gf squares. Make 4 for the bottom row. You'll want to add one side, trim and press before adding the other side. Of course make sure you're sewing them right sides together.
Lay out the pieces of the block. Sew pieces together to complete rows first.
Ge - A - Ge - A - Ge
Gd - A - Gd
KGfK - KGfK - KGfK - KGfK
Sew rows together, and add Black strip J to the top.
The Ghost Block now measures
8½" × 13½".
If you are the creative type and want to make the mouth or eyes different or add a cute bow or what ever to your ghostie please feel free to do so. 🩷
