Hive 2 June 2016

Hello fellow Hive 2 bees. I live in central British Columbia, Canada. We are about a 4 hour drive from Vancouver. I have been quilting for over 30 years but am new to on-line bees. I have really enjoyed them so far.  I work part time at a stained glass store so my studio space is overflowing with fabric and glass. Life is good.

The block I have chosen for June is called Glory Boxes.

It is 16 1/2" unfinished. I would like the backgrounds to be very light. Not necessarily white, but it can be pale blue, or pale green, or pale pink, or any other pale colour or low volume. No solids please. You will need 8 bright scraps that will contrast with your 4 backgrounds for the block.

The block will be 16" x 16" finished with cutting and sewing less than 90 min.
You will be making 4 units that will then be sewn together to make the final design.

CUTTING:

For EACH unit you cut  Background:  1 (4 1/2" x 4 1/2") square and 2 (2 1/2" x 2 1/2") squares
                                        Scrap A: 1 (2 1/2" x 4 1/2") rectangle and 1 (2 1/2" x 6 1/2") rectangle
                                        Scrap B:  1 (2 1/2" x 6 1/2") rectangle and 1 (2 1/2" x 8 1/2") rectangle

You will be cutting fabric for 4 units, so a total of 8 different bright scraps and 4 different backgrounds. Please do not use solids, Halloween fabric or anything with skulls. And please trim selvages off before cutting. Dig into your 2 1/2" strip and your scraps. I will be happy with vintage and modern. Feel free to use what you have. We are a "Stash Bee".

SEWING:

The sewing begins somewhat like a log cabin construction starting with the large background square and sewing the smaller A rectangle to one side. Press away from the centre square. Then attach the longer A rectangle as shown. Again press away from the centre.

Now add the shorter B rectangle, press away from the centre. And finally add the longest B rectangle and press as before.

The final step is to attach the two smaller background squares. Draw a diagonal on the wrong side of the squares. Place a square side sides together, in each corner where the two fabric scraps touch each other.

Sew along the drawn diagonals. Trim the excess triangles away and press as indicated.

**  Press toward the background on the corner that touches the 6 1/2" B rectangle, and toward the scrap on the corner that touches the 8 1/2" B  rectangle.  This will cause your seams to nest nicely when you sew the units together.

Make 4 units like this using all different fabrics in each please.

Rotate the units as indicated below and sew together. All your long B rectangles will be touching in the centre.  Press as indicated.

I look forward to seeing all your creations.  I will be adding sashing so you do not need to trim the outside. I will do that if necessary. Thanks to everyone.  Waiting for happy mail  !!!   Paulette
