Hive 8 February Tutorial

Hello Hive 8 bees!

I live with 3 little kids so I would like to tell you a joke that is regularly told around our house...

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Banana.
Banana who?
Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

For my block, I would like an orange peel block. I would like my block to have summer colors- think citrus, aqua, purples, greens. For the background, I would love for you to use several different black on white prints, if you don't have a four different ones, it is fine to use the same for each background. I would really like for the peels to each be a different fabric. Here is my Pinterest board for some inspiration.

I am going to link to two blogs that have the tutorial, but I would like for the block to finish at 16"(16 1/2" unfinished). Please use the measurements and templates that I have listed below:

(4) 8.5" squares of white fabric with a black print
(4) 'peels' using the template + seam allowance- each a different color fabric(print or solid)
(4) 'peels'  using the template + seam allowance- made of fusible interfacing

It was really helpful when I made mine to draw a corner a 1/4" from the edge so that I could make sure the peel was in just the right spot as there is only a 1/4" seam allowance. I also pressed my seams open.

'Peel' Template- Make sure to check that it is printing at the correct size by measuring the 1" box

  2. Do you want us to just iron these down , not sew them?

  3. Hi Renea,
Lovly block choice. One question though, are sure about the measurements? I have printed the peel template which is huge. It would not fit into a 8.5 square. Am I missing something?

  5. Puppilalla, I thought the same thing when I printed it out, and had left a comment saying the same. I cut the template out a few minutes ago though, and cut a 8.5" square of paper, and the template does fit.

  6. Wow, in my whole stash I have exactly one black on white print. However I have lots of black on extremely light cream ( like in the bottom left square of your picture) and grey on white. Might an of those fabrics be acceptable? It seems so judging from your test block, but I don't want to assume. Great block, it had been high on my quilty bucket list for a while!

  11. Hi Renae! I was getting ready to try your block and got distracted by Instagram. I started following you and tagged you. Quiltcon has an orange peel quilt being shown that you might like!
