Hive 2 Improv for Valorie

This might not look like improv but it is for me.  I sewed two units of wonky strips and then slashed them lengthwise. Then I inserted the long strips.  I hope it suits your project Valorie.  And just under the wire too.  It is still Aug 30 in my time zone.  Hurray!!!

August Hive 2 Improv

I started a new job this month, which has me living in a different city and state during the week, and home on the weekends.  I packed my sewing machine and fabric, but didn't get them unpacked until yesterday.  I was grateful for an easy improv prompt for this month!  I left the block larger than the 14in square so it can be trimmed to suit our August Queen.

improv block for valorie

This was my first time doing an improv block and to be honest I was a little afraid of it, and that's probably why I procrastinated it. But I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I got a little lost with my use of triangles but was able to find my way back.

I hope you like it!!

Hive 2 for Valerie August

So I’ll admit this one was tough for me. I’ve never improv pieced before, and in general, my piecing style tend to be more planned and precise so I wasn’t quite sure what to do. Probably why I procrastinated for so long. But I actually liked the process more than I thought I would, and I actually like the finished product. I hope it’s improv-y enough, and at least kind of what you were looking for.

It’s on it’s way in the morning 😀

Stash Bee Finish!

I finished my 2019 Stash Bee quilt!  This is my fourth year in Stash Bee but my first finish!  I guess I need to get working on the others...

I asked Hive 4 for penguin blocks designed by Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts.  And boy did my hive mates deliver!  Aren't these guys fabulous??!!!  Many folks named their penguin as they posted pictures on facebook. Special thanks to Karen who made three blocks (!) and Alanna who hive crashed!

I donated this quilt to the Carolina Hurricane Quilts project, coordinated by the amazing Carole of From My Carolina Home.  Thanks so much to Hive 4 for making this donation possible!

August Hive 2 for Valorie

I know my block is very plain.  It started out much busier, but it just was too MUCH for my taste.  I cut the left half of it off and just put plain purple in its place.  I'll include in my package what I cut off and you can perhaps use it for another block.  Enjoy,

This was fun! Love the colors you chose. I’m sending my block, trimmed at about 15” so you can fine tune, and extra scraps and blocks that I hope you can use . 😉. Joan

Block for Valorie

Hi Valorie      Here is my improv block.  I'm not the best at improv, I hope it looks ok, or it's something that you can use. It is very large so cut it up any way you want. I'm also sending a few extra purple strips to use. Enjoy! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with these blocks.

Hive 1 August tutorial - X block for a boy

Hi everyone,

Francis from the Netherlands here :-)

It's my choice this month and I want to ask you to make the block with a boy in mind,
so no flowers or other girly stuff.

It's a big block but also very simple (I think)

Pick 4 colours of blue fabric and a plain ol' white.

Cut one 7,5" square from each blue fabric and cut eight 3,5" squares from the white fabric.

Draw a diagonal on the white squares.

Place two white squares opposite eachother on each blue square.

Sew on the diagonal and cut a 1/4" seam.

Press the whites open and repeat with all blue squares.

Lay out the four blue squares like this and sew them together.

You're done!

The quilt will go to charity, so I want to thank you now for making a boy happy in the future  :-)

Hive 5 August tutorial - Busy Block for Amy

Hello everyone!!

Well, it's that time again.  I have decided to go with the block I did last year.  Its call "Busy"  from Blossom Hearts BeeHive series.

I'm going to cheat a bit and use my post from last year.  Mentally right now I'm preparing for my daughter to go to college at WSU Pullman.  She will be 6 hours away so it's not that bad but still.....

http://stashbee.blogspot.com/2018/10/hive-5-block-tutorial-for-amy-busy.html

This is how these blocks are assembled with what I have so far.  I found that the random patterned ones at the bottom of the picture are not blending well in to quilt.  With that being said try to pick fabrics with a definite color within the pattern of the fabric.

Thank you so much for your contribution to my quilt top.  I'll definitely have enough blocks to assemble very soon.  Happy Sewing,  Amy

Hive 2 August Tutorial - Improv Block for Valorie

Hi BeeMates! Hope the summer is ticking along nicely for you!

It is always a challenge to decide what to select as the block of the month for the Stash Bee! I am just now getting around to working with the blocks I received last year!

This post is a bit long, so here I go...

At heart, I am more of an improv quilter. I don’t know how many of you in Hive 2 do improv, but I am going to go with that for my month of August and let you all get creative!

If you are not an improv person, perhaps it is time for you to try! If you would like to read an article about improve, check out this one by Cheryl Arkison… http://www.cherylarkison.com/diningroomempire/2015/10/what-really-counts-as-improv-quilting.html or here is a very simple tutorial by Cheryl… http://www.cherylarkison.com/diningroomempire/2016/11/23/march-on-free-improv-quilt-block-tutorial
My favorite, Jacquie Gering, offers up this tutorial… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_3d1nyDDG0

If you do circles, that would be fun! Or half circles. Wonky log cabin, anyone? Sew and slash? Plus blocks? Cross blocks? Just strips is easy and clears out scraps. Take a standard block and make it crooked. How about applique? This is time for you to just play and see what comes of it! I promise it is addictive! Like we need another addiction!

Here are some examples, though not necessarily the colors I have chosen…

A Seattle Modern Quilt Guild Giving Committee beauty. Love these colors!

Improv Circles from She Can Quilt...

From Alidiza…these are the colors!   …with some Black and White…or not!

I hope these little pictures give you some ideas.

The color palette I am looking for is Purple, Teal, Black and White. A quick fabric pull from my stash of pieces and scraps revealed these ideas for play in my room…

Please make your blocks 14 inches. Why, you ask? Well…are you ready for this? I just might slash them and put them back together with others! OH MY!!! That is improv!!!

Have fun and I look forward to seeing what you do! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at val1053 at gmail dot com or @facetfully on Instagram.

Happy piecing everyone!

Hive 4 August Block Tutorial

Hi Everyone, I am Pam and I live in Oklahoma.  For my block I am making my new daughter in law a quilt. How we got so lucky to have her in our family is beyond me. She  has been a asset  helping us and my son help raise my daughters 2 little boys. My daughter passed away when they were just 2 and 4 so for someone to come in and take days off so they can go to school function and school parties like their mom would have done is a true blessing.

My block come from http://www.kairleoaks.com  She has a awesome blog and she is on instagram
She kindly gave me permission to use her block and modify to the needed size

I have modified my block to be 9 1/2 by 15 1/2 unfinished

For this block you will need a solid pink and a assortment of green fabrics (the greens  do not have to be solid) Examples Below

I know it is a lot of pieces but by stacking my greens and cutting out multiple 2 inch squares out at the same time and by cutting the pink strips it took me 14 minutes to do that and 39 minutes to piece together.

Cutting Instructions

Green Fabric- (32) 2 inch squares (I stack my green fabric and cut multiple 2 inch squares at one time).

2 of the green  squares will be paired up with the solid pink to make the 1/2 square triangles needed

Pink Fabric (I cut a 3 1/2 inch strips the width of a fat quarter and  (2) 2 inch strips the width of a fat quarter first then subcut into the pieces below)

From the  2 inch strip I cut

(3)  2 inch squares
(8)  1 inch squares
(1) 2 in by 8 in
(1) 2 in by 9 1/2 inch

From the  3 1/2 strip I cut

(1)  3 1/2 in by 5 in
(1)   3 1/2  in by 6 1/2 in
(1)  2 in  by 3 1/2 in

Since I modified the sizes I marked out her measurements and added mine. If you have any question just ask me thru facebook .  I tried to mark this up on the computer but had no luck so I just decided white out and scan picture back into computer was easier.

First thing I did was add the  corners to the blocks that needed the corners added (4 green blocks needed  a 1  in squared added to them and then 2 of the greens needed  (2) 1 inch squares added to each of them as in the picture above. I also did my(2)  1/2 triangles at that time. I sewed corner to corner on the 1 inch block  and also corner to corner on the 2 inch block to make the (2) half square triangles.

I then followed the picture above and piece the block as shown in block above .

With  the finished blocks. you can choose which direction you want your block to go as shown in pictures below I did a couple one way and one the other way.
