Done!

Pulling random squares from a bag surprisingly  required discipline. Wish I had as much this month in getting the block done in a more timely manner instead of in the eleventh hour. Summer melting away quickly.  I'm sending along additional cut squares if you need another block.  This will make a beautiful baby boy quilt.

Hive 9 - July Blocks

Here are my blocks for July!  Kelly asked for these fun feather blocks and I can see why she chose this for a bee block!  While they went together pretty easily, it would take a ton of work to make a bunch of unique feathers for a quilt.  So this is a great way for her to get a lot more variety!

My strips were long enough to cut some more feather halves so I'm sending them along too!  I figured you could combine them with some of your own fabrics to make some more varied feathers.  I know I always end up wanting to make some additional blocks to have enough for the whole quilt so this will give you a bit of a head start.

Hive 6 July Block for Tracy by Karen

I'm squeaking in at the last minute again with my July block. I was surprised how the string blocks were so much more fun for me than I thought they would be, and by how few novelty fabrics I have in my stash. I want to do more strings in the future! I really like how they turned out. Without further adieu...

Hive 4 July block

Hi Hive 4.
Just got back from vacation. I made the block before I left
and had my daughter drop it in the mail for me. This isn't the best picture.
This was a great block. I love 1/2 square blocks. Hope you like it Amanda.

Hive 2 July block is done!

Well, this wonky star block turned out to be more fun then I thought.  I hope you like it!  I also made good use of a little packet of 2 1/2" squares someone gave me.

I got this in the mail on Friday but never got it posted for anyone to see. I learned a lot about myself during this block. Some good, some bad! Hope it works.

July Hive 3 Blocks for Sarah

I'm squeaking in under the wire this month. I've had the blocks done for about a week, but I didn't get to the post office until yesterday. I will say these were lots of fun to make, and I definitely see doing more of them in the future. I ended up doing two blocks, because they were fun. The hardest thing for me was picking out which fabrics to use.

Sarah asked that we tell her about the fabrics we chose. I used several scraps from the line High Street, I used it to make a Turning 20 quilt. I also used several pieces from the Summer Breeze line that my sister used to make a Cheaper by the Dozen quilt. There is some Cotton & Steel from my stash, and rest are from my scrap bin, so they were most likely used on a quilt. I think the reason I liked these blocks is because it is a way to used lots and lots of different fabrics.  I can't wait to see Sarah's finished quilt.

Hive 9, July Block for Kelly

July Block for Kelly

 

This is the second time I have made this block for the Stash Bee. I had a lot of trouble with it last time, because I was much less experienced with quilting then.

 

I thought I would be a master this time, obviously, since I have already made a few of these blocks in order to get one good one last time, right?

BUT,  after printing the pattern from my phone and half making the block, following along with your tutorial, I discovered that the center spine was much smaller than it should have been. Of course this happened while I was trying to pack for a vacation and turn the block out as fast as I could.

Maybe next time I make any printed pattern, I will be sure to check size before sewing. LOL.

 

Finally got the right sized block finished for you. And I was able to take my time to make sure it came out great.

If I ever make it again, I think I will paper piece the stripes onto the pattern piece, to make it easier to keep it from stretching. all the bias sides make it much harder to work with, but I do love it so much!

July Block for Hive 8

This block was interesting and when all put together, the secondary patterns will be great.  Looking forward to seeing the completed quilt! 

My quilting journey began many years ago learning from my grandmother and others in my life and sewing in general in high school.  But I didn't really get into making quilts until I moved to the east coast 7 years ago and wanted to find a community of friends.  I signed up for a charity quilt group and loved it!  Since that time, I've been involved in my local traditional guild and a modern quilt guild, I gift every new baby in our church with a quilt, made numerous charity quilts for pregnancy centers and Quilts of Honor and have really enjoyed sharing this incredible craft and journey with my daughter.  She jumped into the quilting and crafting world 6 years ago and has become a wonderful YouTube, Facebook, and other online video tutorial content provider.  If you get a chance, check out her stuff, just search YouTube or Facebook for Melanie Ham. 

It's wonderful to be a part of this amazing community where I've found so many close friends!

Hello everyone!

And now it is the end of July!  Crazy!  I was unsure about this block (though certainly not about you Amanda!) but I am excited to see the finished product!  I didn't realize the secondary patterns that would emerge with the monochromatic colors.  How cool!

Hive 4: July Block for Amanda

I was a little nervous when I read the directions for Amanda's Random HST block, as I tend to like things very orderly and by the book.  Surprised myself with how much I enjoyed making this block!  It was actually nice not to spend the time I normally doing fussing over fabric placement with blocks.  Really looking forward to seeing the finished quilt using all these different blocks.  It should be fantastic!

July Block for Kristen

Hi Kristen,

I am just in time posting your blocks.  I have picked out the fabric and cut out the parts for a little while but just tonight have sewn it together. Love your color palette and it was easy and quick to put together. Can't wait to see the finished project.

I also crashed Hive 6 and made some Spools for Tracy. They were fun and easy.

Looking forward to seeing August's Blocks in just a few days.

These are my July blocks!  Untrimmed as requested.... seems a little messy, but I do understand!  So easy to make.  I think I have been inspired to make one of these as well.  I love the white center strip, will make a great secondary design!

Hive 3 July

I took forever to start this block.  I thought it would be hard but took me only about 30 minutes once I started. It comes out great. Something to put on my list to make. From the block is a yellow with Dragonflies. I collect fabric with dragonflies. At the end is a blue green white fabric from a binding.  I made the quilt after my friends husband died suddenly. I couldn't think of any other way to give her comfort.  I will send this out today.

Hive 3 July Block for Sarah

I know I'm still in the month but these will be late to you Sarah sorry because of the mail. I've had a disasterous month as a pipe burst flooding my sewing room. Although there wasn't alot of damage, the carpet had to come up and the contents of my sewing room have been spread across 5 rooms for the past month. IT's all sorted and back together now. Actually it's better than before as I've had a chance to sort all my scraps out into colour order. This really helped me when it came to making your blocks.

 I really enjoyed making your blocks and I was very good and made sure my ruler fitted on top with plenty to spare for you

And talking of spare I've put in a few extra strips for you to play with.

July block finally on the way. This was really fun to make and not as hard as I feared! Hope it works in your top. It's funny how some points look better than if I had tried to make a non-wonky star

Hive 7 - July Block for Kristen

The block for Kristen came together rather quickly! I had a bit of fun with the grey arrows...:)

Der Block für Kristen ist leicht, und ich konnte ihn sehr schnell zusammen nähen...und ich finde die Pfeile im grauen Stoff lustig!

I am a bit late with it (I hope Kristen will forgive the tardiness) but the block is going in the mail today. These blocks will make a very pretty quilt!

Ich bin ein bisschen spät dran und ich hoffe Kristen hat Verständnis dafür. Der Block geht heute in die Post - aus all diesen Blöcken wird eine schöne Quilt entstehen!

July Hive 2

I'm running late because I was truly challenged by the star points.  I made the block on the left this morning and it took very little time but I sure struggled with my spatial logic on the first run through with the block (see left.)  I hope they will get out in today's mail - certainly tomorrow's.  Sorry, Marga.  I think your quilt will be beautiful.

Party Crashing for Tracy and Sarah

I had a lot of fun making these blocks. For Tracy in Hive 6, I chose the theme, "A Day at the Beach." The tutorial was a cinch to follow and I was happy with the result. I photographed it by our jetboat, "Current Girlfriend," named after yours truly. I used selvedges for the string square.

For Sarah in Hive 1, I made a set of feathers. Being careful (read: slow) I took my time getting them done and still got the two rights mixed up, but oh well. I like the result and the fact that it is a nice big 18 inch block. A few would make a nice little wall hanging or baby quilt and I will be making it again, for sure. Her color choice worked out great for me; I have been holding onto a yard of vintage Alexander Henry waiting for the right project, and here it is. I used a piece for the solid side of the right feather.

I must be honest, I postponed working on this block as I was intimidated by the feather.  However, once I reviewed the tutorial linked in, it didn't seem too difficult. I found that to be true when I actually started working on this feather.

July Feathers for Sarah in HIve 1...

I finished Sarah's feather block last week and it went in the mail July 21st. I've always admired these blocks but they are a little challenging. I can't wait to see what Sarah does with all her blocks.

Pretty Wonky

And here we are, my July finish. Had to get this one done around a 2-week long training for my new job, but wow, it was worth it! I'm not always one for wonky stars, but these designs really appeal to me. Probably because of the extra visual interest in having multiple stars and different colors. Waaaaaaaaaay low on the white and whitish scraps, though.

Still, I like how this one came out. Thanks for the fun!

Red, White, Blue ... and Orange?

The mere mention of 'wonky' strikes terror in my heart. I'm pretty flexible; I'm ok with changes in plans, or revising approaches that aren't working quite right, but I've never been good with improvisation. I must admit that I couldn't overcome this hang-up so I drafted the star points on paper before executing them.

My husband peeped in on me while I was pulling fabrics and asked about the block I was working on. I mentioned the connection to The Netherlands and that I was planning to work in red, white, and blue since their flag has the same colors as those of us in the United States of America. He suggested that I add some orange in. Stupid me; I just haaaaaaad to ask why. Turns out, the athletes for Holland wear orange . He said that since the Olympics will be starting soon, that I should sneak some orange in to represent the year.

This was a fun block to do this month.  I started to over-think the color placement and then just decided to randomly pull out strips and I like the result.  Hope you do, too.  Everyone of them has been used in a quilt, bag or sundress.  Already in the mail so you should be receiving it soon.

Hive 3 July for Queen Sarah

Queen Sarah, these two strip blocks are on the way to you. Found it hard to learn to choose random fabrics and random widths but thoroughly enjoyed the results. (Not gonna lie, hardest was not trimming them square, but as requested, they're untrimmed and over 12 1/2"). I can't wait to see the results of your blocks!

Sarah wanted to know about some of the fabric origins in our blocks. A couple of the strips in mine are left from a quilt I'm making for a friend. She's retiring after thirty years of nursing. Loves the beach, swimming and reading. I'm halfway through a lap quilt of bathing suits for her - figured she can put her feet up after the beach and read a while.

July block hive 8

I think this is the latest in the month I've finished a block.  My stash took a beating with my submission for the #quiltsforpulse drive, and I had bits and pieces of turquoise, but nothing with big enough pieces for this.  Fortunately, I won one of the door prizes at my guild's last meeting, so I had a nice gift certificate to go shopping with!  Once the fabric arrived I just needed to find a quiet time to get to work.  This came together quickly, and I like the colors together more than I thought I would.  The green is brighter than it looks in this picture.   I'll get this in the mail tomorrow.

Hive 5 July Block for Patty

This is going to be an amazing quilt Patty and I can't wait to see the finish!!  My blocks are ready to rocket (okay snail mail) to you today.  I used some Anna Maria Horner Dowry feature fabric and found a Japanese tone-on-tone to pull the red out even more.  I think it worked and hope you love them.

A recap of this month: Gorgeous inspiration photo, our own pieces of Patty's fabric to work with, a nom nom fabric pull photo, great directions, and the blocks I'm seeing finished are truly drool worthy. Well done Patty and Hive 5!!  Upping the ante once again for the rest of us who haven't been queen yet.  What am I going to do when it's my turn?  Good thing it's not a competition because I've already lost.  :-)

I thought I would have time to make you three blocks, unfortunately no.  So I'm sending back enough gold C + S Netorious and your white for another block if you want.

You asked us to post another interest of ours as we post these blocks.  You just never know where the Venn diagram will overlap right?  About 4 years ago I joined a car club and got help restoring my step father's 1966 Sunbeam Alpine.  It is a two seater red convertible British made sporty little number that my step dad bought in 1967.   I have it entered in the NW All British Field Meet taking place this Saturday.  It's not even close to concourse ready, it still has the original interior and a paint job from 1972 but it's a super fun car to drive and there is a section of car lovers that enjoy a vintage car with it's patina "intact" as it were.  I'm one of those.  If I put a nice paint job on it I would be afraid to drive it and enjoy it.  It's in pretty good shape so I've left it mostly as it was when I got it (except that she runs like a top now!!) and love that it is an original car and tells a story about where it's been and what it's done.  And what an education for me restoring it, I didn't even know how a combustion engine worked when I started, now I can remove and re install the carbs without help!!  I even helped a friend replace his clutch!  Who knew I could do that!?!

I know you said only ONE interest but I also own a small restored 1955 travel trailer which I call Trixie and I'm totally in love with.  There are photos of both my vintage car and vintage trailer on Instagram if anyone is interested to see them.

Thanks for this cool block pattern and as I said before you have a real winner on your hands here.
This quilt is going to be gorgeous when done.

Hive 4: Random HSTs for Amanda

What a fun way to put a block together! I have another quilt with a million pieces to put together and I think I'll use the "random out of box" method to piece it, because if I have to think about it and hit the design wall, it'll never get made.

I'm afraid my block is woefully low on variety, because it was a complete fluke I had any solids at all, let alone a grey. The only reason I had the blue was because I had to buy a bit for Jennifer's block in April :).

 
 Also, Kiwi wanted to say hi!

I procrastinated a bit on making this block because it seemed so complex, and frankly I was intimidated. But once I got down to it, the block was actually very simple to construct. I love that there aren't seams to match or points to preserve. Great block choice Patti!

This month's block was a breeze to put together! And what wonderful colors!

My stash includes a large variation of blues and teal so that was an easy pick. I still have to trim it up and then it will be in the mail.
