August Block for Amber - Hive #4

What a fun block to make!!  This is one that I will definitely be making again :)

Mailing it off to you today!

Hive 1 September Block

I hope you don't mind, but I totally disregarded the whole Kona Charcoal thing. I thought I knew which block I wanted, but when it came down to it, I decided to go with something easier. I'm crazy busy with commission work and TRAC and bees and church and my daughter's health and I think I just need some simplicity in my life right now. Instead, I am asking for Starburst blocks because they are pretty.

All of these images have been hijacked from Film in the Fridge's blogpost you can find here. If you don't follow this blog, you really should.

I saw this quilt when it was first posted in 2010 and it was immediate love. Infatuation. Amore. I know it's been done, but I don't care. I want one of my very own!

Want to know what's more awesome?? She made a tutorial too! Bonus! You can get that here.

I would like you each to make at least 2 blocks. I say "at least" because if you have time, I would LOVE more. I did the math and if each of you makes two, it only gives me enough to make a crib size quilt, hence the whole "the more the merrier" attitude. Trust me: this is a lot easier than the paper pieced butterflies I was going to have you make!!

I'm a little obsessed with color. I adore the colors in the original quilt.

And, if you need more inspiration for colors, you can hit up my pin board full of beautiful, "pinspiring" images.

If you are having any issues with this block, feel free to email me directly.

Thanks so much!! I can't wait to see the finish products!!

Stacked Coins block for LIsa

Here it is Lisa, sorry I didn't have more of the requested colors to add.  Although some of those colors are in my stash, they are not the right shade,or they are floral/novelty prints.

Will drop it in the mail either tomorrow after work or Saturday morning.  Hope it is okay.

Sorry to cut it so close to the end of the month, but I made it! :)

Stacked Coins for August Hive #1

This was a nice block to make. I was travelling for most of the month, but I had the strips done before leaving and could put them together this week. (photo is a little blurry, from early this morning)Stash Bee August
There are pearls and gold, for every good pirate ship should have treasure to hunt.
Off in the post it goes to the USA!

August Block for Kelli - Hive 3

Kelli - I'm finally (almost) finished!
They're a tiny bit big, so I'll leave for you to trim down, if that's okay.  The photo is a little darker than I wanted - so just know the turquoise is a little brighter.  We've got clouds, wind and rain from Isaac right now blocking my lovely light.

I'm on the fence whether I'll hand sew the centers on, it may depend on how baby behaves himself tonight.  Either way, I'll get it mailed off to you before Friday.

Hive 4 - August Block

I actually got a block done before the end of the month (apologies again to Jess for the late sending of her pair last month, I mean this month).  Purple, black and white fit right in with my stash and the block was fun and not overly arduous to construct, so thank you!  I definitely plan on make more of these in the future for quilts.

Hive 1 - Lisa's August Block

Hi Lisa,

This block ended up a little tall, but if you take two rows off, it'll end up at around 16.5 or so inches. I have no idean what happened, but I hope you you like it.  I'll pop it in the mail tomorrow.

Stacked Coins for Lisa

Lisa, I have to admit I have no idea what happened during the final pressing.  It was fine and gorgeous one second the next it had big orange splotches on it.  I'm not sure if my iron malfunctioned and burned the fabrics or if its a stain from my ironing board or what it is really.  I'm sure not going to use the iron or the board cover again but with that being said I don't want your block to be late either so I'm going to send it as is and also send you fabrics to replace those three strips with the marks on them.  I am sooo sorry.  NOTHING like this has ever happened to me before.  *Hangs head in shame.* Shows me for trying to buy a cheaper iron.

Otherwise I loved the process of choosing just the right fabrics and making this block.  Hope you like it, er, most of it.

August Hive #2

I am late but not to late. To warm up the sewing machine I made the block for Rachel. It will be posted as soon as possible

I am sure you have already seen them but I hope you like it. Can't wait to see them all together. I am sure you will have lots of fun to play around!

The rest of Hive 3, please contact Kelli to notify her the status of the blocks.

I know that several of you have had problems with this block.  I am deeply sorry, as it was not my intention to cause so much heartache with a difficult block.  Seam allowance seems to be the biggest predictor whether a block will be the correct size.  Verify that you are using a scant 1/4" seam allowance.  My bernina has a 1/4" foot, and it will give a seam allowance that is greater than a 1/4".  I finally learned to guide the fabric in from the edge of the foot in order to get that perfect scant 1/4" seam.  See this post for some other hints for the 1/4" seam.  There are also many other blogs that have great hints and tricks to the perfect 1/4" seam.

Hive 3, block for Kelli

Finally! I got these blocks finished.  I got back home on the 18th and have been working on them since then, but I ran in to a fair amount to trouble along the way (it's probably best you just don't look at the backs of these, Kelli!)  In the end, though, it was a fun and cute block to make; I hope they work for you.  They are squared up but not trimmed and I am including scrap fabric for the hexies since I am terrible at hand applique.  I can't wait to see this finished quilt!

Hive 4 for Amber

Hive 3 - August block

First of all, let me apologize for the awful pictures. I am having camera issues.

Second, I adore this block. I am planning my own dresden quilt so I used this as the excuse to go ahead and get the ruller (which I found at Jo-Anns for half off!!).  I hope Kelli enjoys it:)

Hive #1 for Lisa

This is for you Lisa!  Hope it is what you are looking for.  This was a fast and easy block to put together.  It is a littler larger than 16.5" and thought I'd let you trim it down.

Have a great Sunday!

~Hive #3~ Dresden Fan for Kelli

So this block was a little frustrating and challenging for me.  First attempt - I didn't added the 1/4" seam allowance on the template included with the tutorial and they ended up being too small.  So, now I have two 12-1/2" blocks for me to use!

Stashbee - first try fail

Second attempt was a little less frustrating because I went and bought a dresden ruler to aid me in cutting.  (Jo-Ann's had Wrights®/EZ Easy Dresden Quilting Ruler for 1/2 off - yay!!)  So, after sewing all the pieces together it actually ends up the correct 14-1/2" block. ;0)

Stashbee August Hive #3

I used the Kona Nightfall for the dark - I really like it with the orange fan blades.

Hope you like it Kelli!

Hive 2 August Block for Rachel

Here's a shocker...I'm ahead of schedule and finished with my August block!  I'll be mailing it on Monday.

I love how the look of the block changes just from rearranging the layout.  I really love this block and I'm so glad Rachel chose it.  I'm still new to paper piecing so it was good practice for me.

Rachel, I hope you don't mind but I decided to leave the paper on to make sure nothing stretches while it's traveling overseas.  I used tiny stitches so it should easily tear off.  I hope you love it!  :O)

Hive 2 July & August Blocks

I'm running quite a bit behind on the July block.  I waited too long to order fabric and then had some difficulty finding it.  Anyhow, it did come in a few days ago, and here's the block I came up with:

I hope you like it, Jennie, and sorry it's late!!

I also finished the August block.  I hope the colors/placements are okay.

I plan to mail them tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

August Block for Lisa Hive 1

I loved sewing up this bright and sea-side coloured block today, I couldn't take a good photo of it though, the direct sunlight was washing out the colours so opted for a dull 'in the shade' one instead! Hope it is macho enough!

Lisa's block

Here is Lisa's block for August......  I really hope it's OK.  It's not quite square I'm afraid as I only had a tiny bit of pale grey in my stash.

But I did manage to find some pirates to go in there!

It'll be in the post tomorrow

I hope you're all enjoying the summer (we are!)

The colours this time were well in my range, so choosing fabric was really easy - hope they sit happily with the others you receive.  It will be in the post tomorrow so should be with you early next week.

Thanks for the lesson - Pauline

Hive 2 ~ July Block

I'm finally finished with my July block for Jennie.  I sent it out today.  I must apologize for my tardiness.  My only excuse is a ton of traveling in July.

I really enjoyed this block but it definitely takes a little time to get it together.  Jennie, I hope you like it!

Hive #1 August Block

This month's block is really pretty simple.  My youngest son, Gideon, is 9 and a half, and needs a 'grown up' bed quilt...he's done with baby stuff ;)  So these blocks will be used to make that quilt. (Edited to add: no girly hearts and flowers fabrics, then...but I was able to find many that worked, even some with plant-like patterns, but not 'girly', so it shouldn't be too hard!  I even used one, third from bottom, that has a heart on it, but it's sort of hidden in the graffiti ;)  I don't know that it really has a name - I've seen it called Uneven Stacked Coins, or Stacked Volumes.

Block Size - 16.5"  If you want to leave a bit extra around the edges, I'd be happy to trim it down.

Background fabric - Light to Medium Greys...Kona Ash, Iron, Steel, Medium Grey, etc...all are fine.  Or if you have a light to medium grey from some other quilt quality line like Bella, that's fine too.  I just don't want it to be really dark, like the Charcoal - although it that's all you have, use it.  I don't want anyone to have to buy something special.  Then again, if you've been dying to have a reason to buy a new solid like the Iron or Steel, feel free to use this as an excuse ;)   I used Medium Grey for my block below.  You will use strips 2" wide x the width of fabric.  More on that later.

Other fabrics - I'd like to have all blues, aquas and yellowish-greens...bright, happy water colors for my son who sleeps in a bed shaped like a pirate ship ;)  They will be differing lengths (good if you have scraps!) of 2" wide x anywhere between 5" - 13" or so.  That way the strips can be staggered in the block.

2" wide strips

2" wide strips of the scraps, too

A shot of me half way through, laying the strips out as I add the grey.  Excuse the washed out photos...it's been raining here for days...I actually looked up today's weather at 1:00 this morning, and decided to take a chance and wait til today to post this, just so I could get that photo at the top, of the finished block in the sun, lol.  Thankfully it worked, but it's raining again already!  Anyway... the best way to do this is the cut/arrange your scraps out first, then make note of where you had them (I took quick pics with my iPad, which worked well to help me remember how I wanted them) and then attach grey to each side.  I laid my strips out on my cutting mat, so I could eyeball about 18 inches square and then added grey to either side so that they would have enough on each side to trim it to 16.5" later.  Does that make sense? Once they are all laid out and it looks right, you attach the grey to either side and sew the 12 strips together.

Here is a tutorial for it, too, that you can use...it's a lovely one that The Sometimes Crafter put together.  I searched for one because I wasn't sure I did a very good job explaining here :(   There is a PDF at the bottom of the pics with her instructions.  Just remember that the strips for this one are 2", so that the finished size will be 16.5" square...instead of the smaller dimensions used in the tutorial.  Thanks so much...I can't wait to see the blocks you come up with, and my son is over the moon with excitement!!

Hive #1 July Block

Here is my July block for KristyLou - I really liked this block, a lot!  In fact, pulling some of the colors for this gave me the idea for this month's block, which I will put up once I file this :)  I made block 3d - hope that's a good one!  It isn't wonky, it's just on grass that hasn't been cut in several days so it's sort of dipping down here and there.  And if you see spots, it's from that non-stop rain, lol!
